Game Thread #81: 13 miles, 192.5 yards to go!

As I'm sure no one needs to be told, today's the rubber match between the Cubs and Brewers. The Brewers are looking to continue their early-game dominance over Cubs pitchers, while the Cubs faithful have termed this a must-win game.

A couple roster moves: the Cubs put Rocky Cherry on the DL and recalled Billy Petrick, circumventing the rule saying a player must spend 10 days in the minors once sent down. The Brewers also shook up their bullpen, trading Jose Capellan to the Tigers for minor-league LHP Chris Cody.

Today's matchup pits Dave Bush for the good guys against Jason Marquis for the Cubbies. A much maligned free agent signing, Marquis hasn't been awful for the Cubs though he has struggled lately, not pitching past the sixth inning since May 24. Dave Bush looks to lower his ERA below 5.00 for the season while avoiding giving up the big inning that was a trademark of his starts to begin the year.

Lineups:

Milwaukee
Hart, RF
Hardy, SS
Braun, 3B
Fielder, 1B
Hall, CF
Estrada, C
Jenkins, LF
Weeks, 2B
Bush, P

Chicago
Soriano, LF
Theriot, SS
Lee, 1B
Ramirez, 3B
DeRosa, RF
Fontenot, 2B
Pagan, CF
Hill, C
Marquis, P

Go Brewers! Let's make sure Marquis continues to leave before the seventh.

I hope no one minds
I got impatient and wanted a game thread.

No Sunday Lineup
It's kind of nice to have a few day games in a row to make it unnecessary.

its great
not to have the sunday lineup- I get to watch this one on WGN. Yes everyone - nationwide.
It wasn't everywhere yesterday.
Just heard breaking news here- not much to theYoungCrew fans but Mike Hargrove Seattle Mariners manager is going to resign. Strange they were just blazing a trail to the wild card.

Kind of a weird time to resign
I wonder if he was forced out though. Hasn't there been agitation about how he ran the team for a while?

Interesting
Does any team's blog like their manager though? ;-)

I wonder if he'll make an error in a third straight game.

Good thing
Bush isn't moving to the bullpen. It would suck to have 5 good starters.

All star's..
Who is gonna get in???
I am thinking Fielder, Hardy, Cordero and Sheets will get in. I don't think any Brewers will be in the final vote.

by trl1020 on Jul 1, 2007 2:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably a good guess
Estrada could make the final vote.  Martin and McCann are probably in before him though.

by molitorfan on Jul 1, 2007 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know about Hardy, honestly
There's a lot of good shortstops out there. I guess it's around 3:30 Central that the teams are announced, according to Powell.

Braun and Hart...
are having really good years, but don't have the at bats. Maybe Jenkins could get a final vote spot with his HR's.

how come no one said anything about
the play at home where he threw him out, that was a horrible call, throw beat him there and everything

by Bigdogg2002 on Jul 1, 2007 2:20 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Looked out to me.
I guess no sense in complaing. Now lets just get some runs here and catch up.

I'm listening on the radio
So I didn't actually see it. Maybe Estrada tagged high or something - it didn't sound like they argued too vigorously.

the throw from jenkins
was a really good throw, and he did tag him a little high but he was out, no doubt about it

yes
horrible call.  He was out.

Soriano...
He just had the HR trot there, but it wasn't even close with the wind.

A Jenkins triple?!
The last time he did that was July 7 last year, also against the Cubs.

17 games now with that nicely-timed home run.

Damn
What a frustrating game.

Put Bush in the pen.

Or, my other theory.  A tag-team effort every 5th day with Bush/Vargas.  Ned could just say "Hey, go out there and throw your hardest, filthiest stuff for 3 or 4 innings."

Would that not work?  Am I an idiot for having that idea?

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Jul 1, 2007 3:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I had that idea involving Gallardo
Limit his innings by having him go 5 and either Bush or Vargas finish out the game. It would limit their use in the bullpen though to that one day and leave the staff shorthanded otherwise.
Joe Borchard 2007 watch: 184 PA, 56 K, 53 TB

by TheJay on Jul 1, 2007 3:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well,
so what?  Burn out Bush or Vargas' arm and then go out and buy another pitcher with all the money the club is going to make this year.

It's a business, is it not?  Nobody around the city seems to be in love with either pitcher anyway.  People loved Doug Davis, and they shipped him out.  Right?

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Jul 1, 2007 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bizarre
I don't know that many really liked Doug Davis by the time he was traded anyway. Both Bush and Vargas are under team control for not too much money for a few more years, also, so that's a valuable commodity. You probably don't want to intentionally try and ruin their careers.

Also, if you spend big for another pitcher next offseason, that's less money down the road to sign the young guys we have now down the road.

Well
Marquis pitched well and took advantage of the Brewers' willingness to swing and Marmol was nasty out of the pen. Just have to tip your cap to the Cubs and congratulate them on getting back to .500 for the second time in three days.
