Game Thread #89: Four Days is a Long Time

We're back in action at Miller Park, with Chris Capuano starting his second consecutive game, this time against the Rockies and Jeff Francis. Francis is one of the many pitchers who I eagerly drafted in my fantasy leagues about two years too early: I got excited about the potential back when it was just potential. Now he's 8-5 with a 3.87 ERA, and even better on the road. Away from Coors, his ERA is 3.12, though his peripherals are shaky: 35 K's and 19 BB's in 52 innings.

Speaking of those back-to-back starts, I'm sure Cappy is a smart guy, with the Duke Econ degree and all, but sometimes...well, his sound bites must not get across how bright he is. On those starts:

"It's definitely weird. Weird, but not weird."

Totally.

The Rockies haven't made much noise this year, but they are a decent team; it's just hard to get much attention in the West this year. Rluzinski gives us his series probabilities, which include a 21.6% chance of sweeping and a 64.8% shot at winning 2 or 3 games. Either one is fine with me.

Go Brewers!

from the same mlb.com link
Yost will go with Capuano for the first game of a three-game set against the Rockies on Friday evening at Miller Park, with Sheets going the next day. Yost bumped Sheets back a day because he tossed an inning during the All-Star Game. The pair will be followed by Jeff Suppan, Dave Bush and Claudio Vargas in that order.

Capuano - Nasty splits.
First 39 innings

31 H
10 ER
2 HR
13 BB
31 K

2.31 ERA

The next 40 innings

0-6

53 H
32 ER
20 BB
36 K

7.20 ERA

oops
7 HR in his last 40 innings.

Weird, but not weird
(I think I might have to make that my signature.)

Clever...
but not clever.  :)

Now I'm getting carried away.
Might as well turn it into a diary.

If I calculated right, Capuano had a .257 BABIP in the first 39 innings and a staggering .383 BABIP made worse by allowing the 7 HR in 40 innings.

I'm thinking that he was pretty lucky the first quarter season, and pretty unlucky the second quarter.

His K/9 rate is as good as ever though his BB/9 has reverted to pre-2006 numbers.

I'm inclined to think that he'll come around

by grant76 on Jul 13, 2007 6:25 PM CDT up reply actions

i hope so but...
I just don't see it happening.  Cappy doesn't have the stuff to be walking as many batters as he has this year.  His hit rate might be up and that might not be helping but those walks are killing him.  If he can't find the strike zone it could be a long second half for a guy who historically has had bad second halves.

I'm so excited for the game...
the All-Star break hasn't seemed this long in my entire life!!!

Good first inning
Almost all of those balls were knee high for Cappy which is a good sign.

what the heck
is jenkins looking for?? That was the best pitch to hit the whole atbat

damn
I know thats a tought catch, but I always think that if it hits your glove, you should have caught it, that one really hurt

I don't know where you're going with
that statement.
But, I am in Utah and finally able to "see" a game.
THAT was very impressive---
Braun going opposite yard;
Fielder showing great patience and knowledge of the strike zone.  Uh, not to mention the contact power!
Bob Gibson threw 9 pitches: "two different fastballs, two sliders, a curve, a change-up, knockdown, brushback, and hit-batsman."

Just a "Big Love" joke
But seriously, these guys are quite the combo in the middle of the order.  They went back to back Saturday in the first inning in Washington.  Two times in three games aint too shabby!

wow
quick hook.
what's got into ned.  he did not look happy at all

by Kocchatollah on Jul 13, 2007 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

I like the quick hook
Hopefully second half Ned is an improvement.  By the way, I hate Duke.  Way to go 3 innings Crappy.

by molitorfan on Jul 13, 2007 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

OMG!!
Yost  is making a pitching change. . . .and it's not the 6th inning. . . and the game is not blown yet!!

I'll betcha there was a mid-season review of his "decisions" or "too late decisions" that cost the squad several games.

KUDOS, NED!!!

Bob Gibson threw 9 pitches: "two different fastballs, two sliders, a curve, a change-up, knockdown, brushback, and hit-batsman."

by tvnick5 on Jul 13, 2007 8:22 PM CDT reply actions

Awesome
Very good call by Ned.  I'm speechless.

Not only did CV do a good job, but it holds the starting pitcher accountable.  I like the fact that Yost is telling the starters that they better be ready to pitch, because they're not going to be given an extra inning or two to find their groove.  Good job by Neddly.

An actual rally!
Long-time Brewer fan (and transplanted Wisconsite) who recently found you guys...love the site and have to say that while I love the homers, it is great to see a real 2-out rally.  Too bad JJ didn't keep it going.

Amazing!
Jenkins against a lefty is 0-3 with three strikeouts!

Who would have guessed?

He reminded me of my little league coaching days
the kid would swing at the 1st 2 strikes. . . and then become totally psyched out-- so much so that he'd watch the 3rd one go by.

Wow
Tulowitzki has a cannon.

by Dutch on Jul 13, 2007 9:31 PM CDT reply actions

Thoughts...
Kind of a crappy night for the Screwers tonight. CV giving up 5 runs ( I won't complain since he's been stellar all season), and Cappy's poor performance sabotaged out chances tonight. Tulowitski has a rocket, and it's a shame we didn't capitalize on his error. On a different note, as Hall's nearing the end of his DL stint, I think we'll trade one of the outfielders for, hopefully, a legitimare AA or AAA prospect. Now, I'd keep Hart, Gwynn, and Hall, of course. That leaves Blockhead, Jinx, and Gross. Since BH balances things handed-wise, that leaves the other two. We could probably get that for Jinx, but he's having a decent year. We may have to take less for Gross, but I think Gwynn has earned his spot. If Doug is looking for bullpen help, he should merely trade Spurling for whatever. Thatcher, Balfour, and Parra have earned a shot, methinks. If the previous or the latter are called up, it would give Ned his much-wanted 2nd lefty out of the pen. Good call?

mlb.com headlines:

Colorado: "Three's a Charm"

Milwaukee: "Three's a Bomb"

...ok?  that's weird.  but not.......weird.

Notable, but not notable
With his two home runs tonight, Ryan Braun moves into a tie with 17 other players for the 119th most home runs in their first season in the majors. One more bumps him all the way up to T-97th. :)

Also, Rickie Weeks got his second hit of July tonight. If gets hits in each of his next 25 at bats, he'll be a .300 hitter.

Heh, yeah
Go figure that I start watching Borchard's K vs. TB and he gets mired in the longest games streak of his career without striking out.
