Game Thread #94: Meet the New Ace

(Same as the old ace?)

Gallardo's now back in the rotation, starting this afternoon (1:05 CT) against Livan Hernandez. Since Hernandez is a righty, we shouldn't be subjected to back-to-back days of Tony Graffanino in left field. Creative? Yes. Acceptable? Ok. Really f'ing weird? Absolutely.

Once again, last night the Cubs narrowed the division lead, which stands at 3.5 games. In Chicago, they'll be finishing up the four-game set this afternoon with a matchup between Matt Morris and Ted Lilly, with Barry Bonds apparently in the lineup. You don't need me to tell you how nice it would be to pair a Milwaukee win with a San Fran win.

Go Brewers!

I'm optimistic
It's all about the pitching matchup:
  • Gallardo has pitched like someone who knows what he's doing on the mound.  If he has any rookie jitters, I haven't seen them.
  • Livan, on the other hand, sells cartoon balloons in town.
Prediction: Brewers take a balloon and go sailing, leaving Livan and the D-Backs far behind with a 6-2 win.

i wish i shared the optimism
Do you realize we've only reached the 5 run marker twice in our last 12 games (and we lost one of those)? The whole team feels kind of cold to me. When we're winning, someone is usually on fire. Braun and Hart have cooled, Fielder is in a six day homerless drought, Estrada and Weeks are ice cold. its all about the hitting today folks. we badly need at least 3 of these next 4 on the homestand. Considering how bad the Giants are, I'd like to see us take them all.

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on Jul 19, 2007 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice Elton allusion
If for no other reason than the clever nature of the post, I'll agree with that assessment.

Seriouly, though, it doesn't seem to me the bats have gone that cold(besides Hart) - just with risp..

And with YoGa on the mound and the bullpen more rested, we shouldn't have to put up over 5 runs to win.. Hopefully..

Side note: Damn, I wish this game was on TV. The squeeze play or radio broadcast doesn't  give you a good feel for how someone is pitching.

that would be independent confirmation
because right now here's the Brewerfan.net thread, and it seems like they and WSSP are playing a little circular game: http://p092.ezboard.com/fbrewersfandemoniumfrm6.showMessageRange?topicID=2289.topic&start=41& ;stop=50

by Bill @ Brew Crew Ball on Jul 19, 2007 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Whaaaaaaa?
If this is true, why is Gwynn still in the game? Getting ride of Wise isn't, what's the word, wise. He may not be spectacular, but he's solid

And this wouldn't necessarily help the outfield logjam. You would still have six: Hall, Mench, Jenkins, Gross, Hart and Dunn, or one too many in my opinion.

Plus, I don't think my heart could take watching Dunn whiff with the bases loaded in an important spot.

I'm not sure I like that trade, if true
I'd rather of done the Gwynn for Otsuka, straight up.

Gywnn seems more valuable to me then most on this sight believe.. And do we really need to be trading solid, if unspectacular, bullpen help away? Isn't Wise second best guy against lefties? Is Parra going to stay up then? Aside from when he got rattled after hitting a batter last night, Balfour looked good. But either Balfour of Parra have to go back down when Hall comes back. Unless Rickie is getting sent down?

Arm problems and headed for the DL?

by grant76 on Jul 19, 2007 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Apparently
From RotoWire

"Otsuka (forearm tightness) was unable to get loose while warming up in the bullpen during Tuesday's game and will likely be placed on the 15-day DL, the Dallas Morning News reports."

"'I just couldn't get loose,' Otsuka said. 'I don't know what it is.' Otsuka was one of the names expected to be the subject of trade rumors around this time, but the uncertainty surrounding his injury should put those to rest pretty quickly."

This was news to me.. I would have loved to get someone to compete with Turnbow for the '08 closers job.. There goes that idea.

Too simple of an analysis?
I get the sense from reading national writers and seeing ESPN and such that there's a movement among those types that supports a 1st-place Cubs team. Not to get all conspiracy theory, but it's a better story for their purposes.

I mean, what's left for a national-level baseball miracle? Red Sox? Seen it. Yankees v. Red Sox? Never going to be better than 2003 and 2004. After that, the best-possible story they can overkill on a daily basis is a pennant-chasing Cubs team.

It'd be nice to have 4 or 5 dependable RP for a playoff push, and while Dunn homers and walks a lot more than Jenkins or Mench, his defense is atrocious, and it's not like we're short of middle of the lineup hitters...

Or rather, that seems like an offer the Reds can't refuse, which in my mind makes it a horrible idea for the Brewers.

Dunn deal
If Melvin is considering getting Dunn, that makes me think they're worried about the Bill Hall high-ankle sprain. If Hall can't come back very soon or has to have a lot of days off, then you play Hart in center and get Dunn in at - what is he? LF? I can't believe I don't even know.

Anyway, the lineup really tails off in the bottom half without Billy in there. Such as pitching around Fielder earlier today with two outs to get to Estrada. Have to make teams pay for avoiding Fielder.

I'm not saying Dunn is the guy we should get, but ...

For example, watch right here. They'll dodge Fielder and take their chances with the bases loaded and one out for Estrada.

Melvin's Response
On mlb.com:

General manager Doug Melvin laughed off reports on Thursday that the Brewers had acquired Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn for a package of players including reliever Matt Wise.

It was a "baseless Internet rumor," Melvin said. And he has become tired of those.

"I'm taking more calls deflecting these kinds of rumors than I've had talking to GMs," said Melvin, who has characterized the trade market as extremely cool.

For listeners calling Reds media relations director Rob Butcher about a possible Dunn to the Brewers trade...please stop..........this is in the MLB rumor mill.......nobody says it has happened or will happen. Rumors of trades fly as the deadline nears. Don't call the Reds asking if it has happened. Thanks.

There is nothing to it. Brewers acquiring Dunn just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

So... playing around with this
where do we bat Dunn in the lineup?

His average is only 257, so we don't want him in the 6 or 7 holes... I'd ideally love to have Estrada in one of those spots.  290/330 in those spots is better than 250/360, at least, in my opinion.  I don't want to mess with the top 4 spots, they seem to have the mojo working, and putting him back to back with Fielder just seems to be begging to see a teams' lefty reliever every day in the 7th.

Question about Saves
In the Cubs game yesterday, there was a pitcher credited with a save, even though the difference in runs was huge. Does anyone know how far apart the scores have to be before you can't get a save?

If you pitch the last three innings or more,
the scorer can credit you with a save.

That "sunday lineup"

Why is Wise batting? I thought Parra would get the final two innings. Hmmm. Hope he gets in. It would be a nice time to break him to the Bigs.

Now even Wise is getting into it.. This is great.

I looked at a few from the days past... 72, 34, 146, 118, 89... not as many comments on the game day thread... is everyone just at work? Or is it because the Brewers are giving people something to talk about? Or is it because it is not televised?

Don't know if this is typical for a day game, but people are using this site more and more it seems.

by jacob on Jul 19, 2007 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Barry Bonds
lives for boos, I wouldnt put it past him to try and break it in Milwaukee just to spite Bud Selig and all his critics.

Plus, with all the talk of Giants management not wanting to re-sign him next season it wouldn't be surprising to see him try and screw them over.

by stevie ray Braun on Jul 19, 2007 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

no way
why does breaking the record in milwaukee have anything to do with bud selig and barry's critics? is milwaukee the headquarters for the persecution of barry?

giants management likes barry bonds, they are not going to "try and screw them over"

this isn't a soap opera. barry's going to break the record at home because that is the best scenario for everyone, it's really simple.

what do they do

Barry only plays on Saturday
Just my guess.  Fox is doing the Saturday game, Bonds doesn't play day games after night games, so he sits Friday and plays Saturday.

Then he only plays Sunday if he doens't hit one on Saturday.

Just my feeling.

Aaron
Back in the day, the commissioner's office handed an edict down to the Braves that they couldn't hold Hank Aaron out of games on the road (Cincinnati, I think) when he had 714 home runs. It worked out in the end and I'm sure Bonds will make it until he's back in San Francisco. Heck, they could even say he's got a day-to-day knee injury if they don't want him to play.

If you were going to use Parra, it would probably backfire only be because he hasn't thrown since July 6. Might as well let him shake the rust off in Nashville.

After that third called strike... took it out of the giants... they would have just needed to get durham on in order for Bonds to come up... well, look forward to playing the Giants... and maybe the whole, wanting to get Bonds to hit the homer in SF will help the Brew Crew with very few feared hitters on the Giants.
