Trades

With the trade deadline looming, Ive decided to jot down all the players who've been in trade discussions.  Our objective is to evaluate the players and decide if they are Brewer worthy and exactly what we would/should give up to see them in a Brewer uniform.  All the players that will be mentioned have been involved in rumors, so im not just throwing out random names.

Roy Oswalt             Kenny Lofton
Jermaine Dye           Edgar Renteria
Dontrelle Willis       Jon Garland
Jose Contreras         Javier Vasquez
Carl Crawford          Eric Byrnes
Eric Gagne             Joaquim Benoit
Adam Dunn              Jeff Conine
Akinori Otsuka         Matt Morris
Jared Saltalamacchia   Morgan Ensberg
Mike Piazza            Mark Teixeira
Todd Helton            Livan Hernandez
Ty Wigginton           Brad Wilkerson
Scott Linebrink        Octavio Dotel

That's just some of the names of guys who could be dealt. So maybe we can stir up some conversation about these guys and maybe the moustache can get some ideas.  We all know he loves the geeks on the internet.

When and/or if you think about these guys coming to the Brewers, keep in mind that the brewers are going to have to give up something for them. In other words, Carl Crawford for Kevin Mench and Grant Balfour probably won't fly.

Eric Brynes is on the top of the list for me.  I love the guy and would love to see his enthusiasm in left field for the Brew.

do we need an outfielder
in this discussion and one involving jermaine dye, there seems ot be a feeling that we need another outfielder, are people that uncomfortable with hall everyday in center when he gets back shortly, hart everyday in right and our favorite menchkins platoon in left, it sounds good to me, with gwynn and the other half of the platoon coming off of the bench, am i missing something?  So i say no to dye byrnes especially for turnbow who at the very least is an above average setup man
With Braun and Gallrado up, is it time for LaPorta to join the team?

Byrnes?
I would say yes to Byrnes in a heartbeat.  Dye, I suppose the case could be made that he wouldn't be an improvement over Menchkins.  But Byrnes adds (dare I say) "intangibles" and "hustle" that are always welcome.

And I do agree with roguejim...
What's to like...
about platoon players whining when they don't play full time?  To get a decent performance out of left field, you need BOTH of them, which means added salary and one less roster spot.

Wait a minute here.
Byrnes improves on Menchkins but Dye doesn't?  That sounds like bizarro world to me.  I award no points for hustle or intangibles, tho I'm sure Doug Melvin does (**jeff suppan**)

I think the only two guys that would be a clear improvement over Menchkins are Adam Dunn and Carl Crawford, and if there's a possibility for one of them, I'd love to know what we'd have to give up, especially for Crawford, who is still very young (25?) and is signed through 2009 for a steal of a deal (provided a trade does not void the club option, but I doubt it does).  I'd give up Parra, Gwynn, etc. for Crawford.  We can even talk Villanueva.

Vasquez would be great.

Oswalt would be great.

The greatest of all would be the Salty one.

But none of those three can be had for anything I'm willing to give up, methinks.  Then again, Kenny Williams likes to give us presents . . .

That's what I was thinking
Byrnes improves on Menchkins but Dye doesn't?  That sounds like bizarro world to me.

Jermaine Dye = Eric Byrnes + a little more power and much less brashness. I can't see how Byrnes would offer, well, much of anything other than a guy for the FSN folks to talk to.

It's almost disturbing how close Eric Byrnes' career numbers are to Kevin Mench's. Factor in Byrnes' good season so far and he might actually be worse.

Byrnes: .269/.330/.456 overall, .257/.317/.424 against righties, .294/.357/.523 against lefties
Mench: .271/.326/.467 overall, .257/.311/.425 against righties, .305/.361/.562 against lefties

How, again, is he an upgrade, other than running around and probably sliding down Bernie's slide before and after every game so he can be on TV?

one distinct difference
Byrnes seems to be getting better while Mench seems to be getting worse.  Mench's numbers are a reflection of his early days with texas.

Byrnes is one of those guys that everyone loves to watch and cheer for.  He's an energizer and he could definitely give this team some energy into the playoffs.

byrnes
He's an energizer

i like byrnes too, but less for his energizeri-ness and more for his gritty battliness. Also he's a proven veteran who plays the game the right way. We need more professional hitters with leadership skills on this team. Also, i think he was once a punter. Those intangibles are immeasurably valuable.

Not really
Byrnes seems to be getting better because he was so awful in 2005. If Adam Kennedy hits his career numbers next year, does that mean he's getting better? I guarantee you if the Brewers had Byrnes in 2005 he'd be reviled here.

Byrnes' season this year would seem to be the classic example of a contract year player. I mean, come on, he's 31 - I can't imagine how he could have gotten any better than the first seven seasons of his career would indicate.

I find him annoying and overrated. Juan Pierre used to be a sparkplug, too.

still contract year
I only want him for the second half, which would still be his contract year.  I wouldnt give too much for a 1/2 year player, but i think he could help.

He was horrible in 2005. However, he was also on 3 different teams in that very season.  Probably isnt very easy to keep switching teams and facing different pitching.

I really dont know who overrates him, considering he didnt make the all-star team with numbers that were all-star worthy.

I can see that you would find a guy annoying that loves baseball and gives his all on every play. That really sounds like something that would be quite annoying.  Even though he got snubbed from the all-star team, he decided to still show up.  Where?  Sitting in McCovey Cove in a kayak with his dog waiting to retrieve a home run.  That's what i like about him.

Sure, he gives his all. Too bad he's nothing special doing it.

I bet Mench would've sat out there too if they'd paid him as well.

That's ridiculous
No kayak can hold Kevin mench.  Too top-heavy.  There are safety issues at play here.

Linebrink
I think he'd be an alright acquisition, though I can't imagine we have much to offer that would be worth giving up for a half season from a right-handed reliever. That, and I can't imagine why the Padres would deal him anyway in the middle of their own pennant race.

3-2-1 Contact
I don't care whom the Brewers target as long as the guy can work the count and make contact instead of swinging from the heels even on 3-2.

Ned for Prez wrote: "braun does that on 3-2

You mean as a person? No.

As an overall hitter? No. He's one of the best young hitters I've ever seen.

As the leading Rookie of the Year candidate? No.

With him having 49 strikeouts in 210 ABs. Yes. Though, I do admire the kid's confidence.

Call me old fashioned, but I like it when guys get defensive when they're behind in the count and try put the ball in play rather than going for the downs. That's just me...

by HobokenCrew on Jul 25, 2007 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

would you rather
he get defensive like counsell and hit a crappy groundball to short on 3-2 or hit a homerun.  The fact is that he has a great OBP and a great avg, so strikeouts dont matter if both of those are high.  Certain guys can get defensive and he does sometimes, but im going to let him swing hard if he keeps putting up those kind of numbers.

Son of "Oh Goodness"
If you're going to guarantee me a homerun everytime Braun gets to a 3-2 count, then I'm in.

But not every 3-2 count results in a dinger, nor does it result in a weak squib to short.

But what a 3-2 count does ensure is that there's close to a 50 percent chance you're going to get a walk. So, why not be defensive at 3-2?

Foul off the pitches you can't drive or pull until you get one you can drive or pull? Why give the pitcher any more edge than he already has (being the edge he has is he has the ball and the batter must hit it...).

As for Braun, the dude's hitting .349. I'm not going to get picky with him (as it seems, neither are you).

I think my greater point is, I don't think the Crew needs another swing from the heels kind of guy in the lineup (like Dunn). The Crew needs someone who can make contact, put the ball in play, keep the inning alive, put pressure on the defense.

In 21 PA with a full count
Braun has walked 8 times and struck out 5.  His OBP is such situations is .524 and his slugging is .538.  Seems to be doing alright to me.

worst GM ever
speaking of trades, how awesome is it to have Doug Melvin as captain instead of Jim Hendry?

this is how NOT to run a baseball team.

I'd like to tinker with it a little bit if we could. A lot of that will be dependent on how we swing the bat the rest of the week.

Hendry is going to use "the rest of the week", 4 or 5 days, to determine where roster changes need to happen. You go Jim! Tinker away!

Otsuka
is the best player for the Brewers on that list, in my opinion.  Certainly Crawford or Brynes are better players, but their overall cost isn't worth it for a Brewers outfield that is already producing.

Over the past month or so what's been most inconsistent (losing and almost losing quite a few games) are our set-up relievers.  Turnbow can be lights out, but when he's not its nice to have a backup plan other than Grant Balfour.

Otsuka is playing well this year and his recent injury, which isn't likely to hurt his pitching when he returns, will only benefit us.  We'll be able to buy him low and get a fresh pitcher further down the stretch.  Add in the prospect of a Otsuka/Turnbow combination next year if Cordero leaves, and he seems like the best candidate for the Brewers.

Trade Deadline
I would go with Gagne, Crawford or Oswalt.  Oswalt and Gagne both fill  needs for the Brewers.  Crawford would jam up a crowded outfield, but his upside is so high, I would take him in a heartbeat.  I highly doubt any of those players will come at a price that Moustache is willing to pay.  Probably for good reason too.

MELVIN on FSN
Made me think we won't look at Byrnes... Melvin goes "He's a good person."  Which, we all know, Byrnes is NOT. I like Crawford. And he's someone we can keep for the future. I won't want Dye next year.

Still
Three prospects for 2 1/2 months seems awfully steep, especially when two of them seem like they might be pretty good.  Getting the sandwich pick helps, I guess (mine will be roast beef, ha ha), though I hope said pick does well enough to justify the expense.

BTW, I believe Linebrink's wife is supposed to have a baby any day now.  Congrats to the Linebrinks!

Scott Linebrink
The more I analyze this trade, the more I scratch my head.  The Brewers gave up a crapload for what will amount to a two month rental.  And the bullpen as arguably the most stable part of the entire ballclub.  What the Brewers need, desperately so, is a veteran run producing outfielder.  If the pricetag for Jermaine Dye is too much, then grab one of the other lesser guys and hope to catch lightning in a bottle.  And pray a thousand prayers that Bill Hall can produce a semi-quality two months of offense.

The Cubs did the Brewers a favor this evening.  Jason Marquis is turning back into the pile o' crap he always has been.  The Cubs could use a bat for right field too.  And in a perfect world, another starting pitcher.  But don't hold your breath for the Cubbies to make any moves.  Jim Hendry is likely to stand pat and hope for Kerry Wood to provide a jolt and for Cornelius Clifford Floyd to hit big time for the remaining two months.

by cubbiebrewerfan on Jul 26, 2007 9:57 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hall has provided that.
He is an above-average offensive center fielder, despite the fact he hasn't hit as well as he did last year.
Weird, but not weird.

by Jeff Sackmann on Jul 27, 2007 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Floyd is our Menchkins except
Floyd gets hurt all the time. So our lightning in a bottle could be either of them and I cant believe you're counting on wood.

With the trade, we'll probably lose linebrink and that will give us an extra first round pick.  A first round pick is more valuable than the guys we traded. Especially, when Inman was projected to be a #4 starter and as you saw tonight, your number 4 got hit up hard. So they are not that hard to come by.

Ned for Prez!! Seriously, he needs a new job.

by Zel123 on Jul 26, 2007 10:29 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Not counting on Kerry Wood
Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me 253 times, shame on Cub fans.  Anything the Cubs get out of Wood will be a bonus.  His mere presence in the clubhouse and dugout will be huge given his prominence among teammates, coaches, the fans.  But any bullpen role he will have will be secondary to Ryan Dempster, Carlos Marmol and Bob Howry.  "IF" he manages to come back effective, then the Cub bullpen should be truly dominant.  Wood threw 97 MPH tonight at Peoria, and is scheduled to throw again tomorrow night.

by cubbiebrewerfan on Jul 26, 2007 10:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look for the Cubs to add a right handed bat
Probably the ancient Jeff Conine.  He can supplement the combo of Cliff Floyd and Mark DeRosa (our unsung hero) in right field.  And he can provide a quality right handed bat coming off the bench.  Pricetag to acquire him should be the equivalent of a used infield rake and a box of sunflower seeds to be named later.  Like I said, I doubt very seriously the Cubs make a "significant" move of any sort.

by cubbiebrewerfan on Jul 26, 2007 10:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

contact hitter DESPERATELY
We need a connect hitter desperately!!! This team is underperforming at bat. Either Weeks, Jenkins, Mench, Hardy, Hall need to start moving the ball.We can't continue with those guys hitting .250 and expect the pitching staff to win this division. They have to decide if these guys will start to hit or continue the way they are. For jenkins and Mench to complain at the beginning of the season about a platoon. Here's a perfect situation to step up and make yost put there name on the line up card.
