Trades
With the trade deadline looming, Ive decided to jot down all the players who've been in trade discussions. Our objective is to evaluate the players and decide if they are Brewer worthy and exactly what we would/should give up to see them in a Brewer uniform. All the players that will be mentioned have been involved in rumors, so im not just throwing out random names.
Roy Oswalt Kenny Lofton
Jermaine Dye Edgar Renteria
Dontrelle Willis Jon Garland
Jose Contreras Javier Vasquez
Carl Crawford Eric Byrnes
Eric Gagne Joaquim Benoit
Adam Dunn Jeff Conine
Akinori Otsuka Matt Morris
Jared Saltalamacchia Morgan Ensberg
Mike Piazza Mark Teixeira
Todd Helton Livan Hernandez
Ty Wigginton Brad Wilkerson
Scott Linebrink Octavio Dotel
That's just some of the names of guys who could be dealt. So maybe we can stir up some conversation about these guys and maybe the moustache can get some ideas. We all know he loves the geeks on the internet.
When and/or if you think about these guys coming to the Brewers, keep in mind that the brewers are going to have to give up something for them. In other words, Carl Crawford for Kevin Mench and Grant Balfour probably won't fly.
Eric Brynes is on the top of the list for me. I love the guy and would love to see his enthusiasm in left field for the Brew.

Byrnes?

And I do agree with roguejim...
about platoon players whining when they don't play full time? To get a decent performance out of left field, you need BOTH of them, which means added salary and one less roster spot.
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Wait a minute here.
I think the only two guys that would be a clear improvement over Menchkins are Adam Dunn and Carl Crawford, and if there's a possibility for one of them, I'd love to know what we'd have to give up, especially for Crawford, who is still very young (25?) and is signed through 2009 for a steal of a deal (provided a trade does not void the club option, but I doubt it does). I'd give up Parra, Gwynn, etc. for Crawford. We can even talk Villanueva.
Vasquez would be great.
Oswalt would be great.
The greatest of all would be the Salty one.
But none of those three can be had for anything I'm willing to give up, methinks. Then again, Kenny Williams likes to give us presents . . .

That's what I was thinking
Jermaine Dye = Eric Byrnes + a little more power and much less brashness. I can't see how Byrnes would offer, well, much of anything other than a guy for the FSN folks to talk to.
It's almost disturbing how close Eric Byrnes' career numbers are to Kevin Mench's. Factor in Byrnes' good season so far and he might actually be worse.
Byrnes: .269/.330/.456 overall, .257/.317/.424 against righties, .294/.357/.523 against lefties
Mench: .271/.326/.467 overall, .257/.311/.425 against righties, .305/.361/.562 against lefties
How, again, is he an upgrade, other than running around and probably sliding down Bernie's slide before and after every game so he can be on TV?

one distinct difference
Byrnes is one of those guys that everyone loves to watch and cheer for. He's an energizer and he could definitely give this team some energy into the playoffs.

byrnes
i like byrnes too, but less for his energizeri-ness and more for his gritty battliness. Also he's a proven veteran who plays the game the right way. We need more professional hitters with leadership skills on this team. Also, i think he was once a punter. Those intangibles are immeasurably valuable.

Not really
Byrnes' season this year would seem to be the classic example of a contract year player. I mean, come on, he's 31 - I can't imagine how he could have gotten any better than the first seven seasons of his career would indicate.
I find him annoying and overrated. Juan Pierre used to be a sparkplug, too.

still contract year
He was horrible in 2005. However, he was also on 3 different teams in that very season. Probably isnt very easy to keep switching teams and facing different pitching.
I really dont know who overrates him, considering he didnt make the all-star team with numbers that were all-star worthy.
I can see that you would find a guy annoying that loves baseball and gives his all on every play. That really sounds like something that would be quite annoying. Even though he got snubbed from the all-star team, he decided to still show up. Where? Sitting in McCovey Cove in a kayak with his dog waiting to retrieve a home run. That's what i like about him.

Yep
Sure, he gives his all. Too bad he's nothing special doing it.
Sitting in McCovey Cove in a kayak with his dog waiting to retrieve a home run.
I bet Mench would've sat out there too if they'd paid him as well.

Oh goodness...
Do you have a problem with him?"
You mean as a person? No.
As an overall hitter? No. He's one of the best young hitters I've ever seen.
As the leading Rookie of the Year candidate? No.
With him having 49 strikeouts in 210 ABs. Yes. Though, I do admire the kid's confidence.
Call me old fashioned, but I like it when guys get defensive when they're behind in the count and try put the ball in play rather than going for the downs. That's just me...

Son of "Oh Goodness"
But not every 3-2 count results in a dinger, nor does it result in a weak squib to short.
But what a 3-2 count does ensure is that there's close to a 50 percent chance you're going to get a walk. So, why not be defensive at 3-2?
Foul off the pitches you can't drive or pull until you get one you can drive or pull? Why give the pitcher any more edge than he already has (being the edge he has is he has the ball and the batter must hit it...).
As for Braun, the dude's hitting .349. I'm not going to get picky with him (as it seems, neither are you).
I think my greater point is, I don't think the Crew needs another swing from the heels kind of guy in the lineup (like Dunn). The Crew needs someone who can make contact, put the ball in play, keep the inning alive, put pressure on the defense.

worst GM ever
this is how NOT to run a baseball team.
Hendry is going to use "the rest of the week", 4 or 5 days, to determine where roster changes need to happen. You go Jim! Tinker away!

Otsuka
Over the past month or so what's been most inconsistent (losing and almost losing quite a few games) are our set-up relievers. Turnbow can be lights out, but when he's not its nice to have a backup plan other than Grant Balfour.
Otsuka is playing well this year and his recent injury, which isn't likely to hurt his pitching when he returns, will only benefit us. We'll be able to buy him low and get a fresh pitcher further down the stretch. Add in the prospect of a Otsuka/Turnbow combination next year if Cordero leaves, and he seems like the best candidate for the Brewers.

Scott Linebrink
The Cubs did the Brewers a favor this evening. Jason Marquis is turning back into the pile o' crap he always has been. The Cubs could use a bat for right field too. And in a perfect world, another starting pitcher. But don't hold your breath for the Cubbies to make any moves. Jim Hendry is likely to stand pat and hope for Kerry Wood to provide a jolt and for Cornelius Clifford Floyd to hit big time for the remaining two months.

Hall has provided that.

Floyd is our Menchkins except
With the trade, we'll probably lose linebrink and that will give us an extra first round pick. A first round pick is more valuable than the guys we traded. Especially, when Inman was projected to be a #4 starter and as you saw tonight, your number 4 got hit up hard. So they are not that hard to come by.
