Still waiting for more, but in the meantime, here's Rotoworld's update on the Billy injury:

Bill Hall was diagnosed with a high right ankle sprain after landing awkwardly while trying to rob Ryan Doumit of a homer in Tuesday's game.

A high ankle sprain can be a 6-8 week injury, though the Brewers refused to place a timetable on him today.

Hmm. Anybody else thinking about a Torii Hunter rental right now?

barring a trade, what would you do? Call up Tony Gwynn JR and have him hit leadoff and move Hart to 5? Move Hart to center and play more Mench and Gross? Play Gross in center? To all of these options I say: YUCK! The most attractive to me is to call up Gwynn, but it seems to me like he would almost HAVE to leadoff because of Weeks stinking up the bottom of the order already- a 7-8-9 of Weeks, Gwynn, pitcher seems really weak. That being said I'm not thrilled with the idea of Gwynn leading off either...so if the price were right, give me Torii Hunter please. (even if he does spell his name with two i's)

So...

you'd rather have an ugly 8-9-1 than an ugly 7-8-9? I understand the problem with having three ugly spots in the lineup, but they've got to go somewhere, and I'd much rather have them all down at the bottom where they get fewer plate appearances.

well, I see your point

but I think that if Gwynn has any value as an offensive player it is his ability (if he actually has it) to get on base- and that is completely wasted by having the pitcher follow him. Also it puts a guy who is hitting the ball well (Hart) in the five hole as opposed to a guy like Jenkins or Estrata.

given ned's proclivities, it seems reasonable to have an all-singles/walks guy in front of the pitcher. if that means the pitcher has an opportunity to sac bunt every time up, it's ok by me.

I'd much rather have the pitcher be sac'ing TGJ over than Hardy doing the same :).

As it is, there may be good arguments on both sides, but unless Corey has a serious slump, no way Ned's moving him from the leadoff spot, regardless whether it has anything to do with his hot streak.

Don't mess with HART

You HAVE to keep Hart in leadoff - that is a 100% no brainer - don't EVER mess with somebody who is on a tear - EVER.

Put Gwynn #8 - if he gets on he id good for 2nd base and the pitcher can bunt him to 3rd.

Of have Gwynn as the 2nd leadoff in #6.

Well, I still say

put Gwynn in the leadoff spot: it's the only place I see him being particularly useful. I'll also just repeat that I don't really like ANY of the in-house options to replace Hall, if he is going to be down for any great length of time- I just dislike that one the least.

Gwynn would obviously be called up....

If Hall is on the DL.

I would put TG in the leadoff spot. He is disciplined (good BB/K), has speed and is good on the basebpaths. And if I remember correctly he hits lefties and righties pretty equally.

I know that Hart is tearing up the place, but frankly, I think he is due to cool off a bit.

Forget Torii hunter

Lets get crazy and get andrew jones, or even Ichiro.

You guys know the truth, we all get excited for viable trades, but when it comes down to the trade deadline, we're always disappointed. We are stuck with TG jr. and he's been playing like crap in the minors. I hope he can spark something again, but im more disapointed with the news about billy. Everone complains about him, but i think he'll be missed.

not my point

im not saying that we havent made awesome trades, we definitely have. However, we never make that blockbuster trade at the time. Sure we get Coco, but he was playing crappy and melvin likes to find the diamonds in the rough. Sexson at the time was not a household name. He was good, but he wasn't richie sexson yet.

My point is, we never make the trade for the superstar of today. Dont get me wrong, i understand why, no money and bad teams building for the future. So I guess this year is uncharted waters, and maybe we will make a big splash. I just have a feeling that ill be disappointed yet again.

If the team was serious about pursuing Otsuka, why not try and get Kenny Lofton too? He'd be a decent rental CF and backup for the rest of the season.

It's funny

Here we were, hoping that a team with an injured outfielder would make for a good trading partner...and then we lose an outfielder.

If we make a trade, I hope we can make one for more than just the short-term. I'm assuming that TGH and Jinxie won't be back next year, and that either left field or center field (whichever one won't be occupied by Hall) will be open. If we don't think TG Jr is starter CF material in 2008, I guess I'd rather see us trade for someone who'd still be a useful starting CF in 2010. (More a Rocco Baldelli than a Kenny Lofton.)

Having said that, I doubt we'd be able to orchestrate such a trade in a short amount of time. Still, I'd hate to give up a prospect of value for Kenny Lofton just for a short-term fix, not when we have long-term OF needs.

It is kind of funny

I think it would be nice to stock up for the long-term but I don't think that's a feasible option. As for acquiring Lofton, I don't know how much more it would take if he was an add-on to an Otsuka deal. Probably a lower-ceiling prospect/AAAA guy at most as Texas doesn't really have a need for Lofton at this point and the bigger names would be brought in for getting Otsuka. I'm sure it would take a while to hammer out a deal with Texas either way, though. As for future outfielder needs, the team controls Gross for a while yet and though his numbers aren't great this year he gets on base a heck of a lot and should put up a decent line if he gets an at-bat more than twice a week.

No, I know that was a pipe dream. I was feeling optimistic. I also want to get next year's closer now, but I doubt that will happen either.

Lofton would be useful --- I guess it would depend on who we'd have to give up. It had better not be someone of any value, not unless we'd get someone appreciably better than what a Gwoss pwatoon would give us.

I'm thinking AAAA players

I don't know what they are deficient in at the high minor league level -- pitching, presumably. Maybe they'd have interest in Chris Oxspring as a throw-in since he'd be a warm body they could stick out on the mound in Arlington right away if need be. Probably a couple low-ceiling low-level minor leaguers, too, but I don't know any names.

It got me thinking

The Brewers of old might have traded CoCo now, to get something before he walks. What about the Brewers of now? If a deal could be had involving CoCo and Otsuka, would you pursue it? It could be a giant homecoming for the Giant Head.

He also says that most Cubs fans are not as they're described here. It's been posted a few times that most Bleed Cubbie Blue posters are probably intelligent adults who know how to participate with civility on a blog, and that it's the "other" 5% that have a problem. I think he's saying that this description is not accurate.

I wonder why he hates Cubs fans so much, or if they know that he has such little respect for them?

Surplus of OF - One Injured OF = Get more OF?

Let's not be rash here, I think Gwynn can fill in admirably. I'd even be OK with Gross playing every day as he does have some power and an alright OBP (.382 in 2006). Gwynn gives the team plus-defense and a PR off the bench when/if the plodders get on base.

The team will be alright, I think a rental would be silly ... the team would probably have to give up too much of its immediate future for a rental.

Especially if Hall is out for only the 4 weeks instead of the 8 weeks. If we bring in another outfielder, it will only mean that Gross will be sent down after Hall comes back.

I know trading for short-term help is what contenders do, but on a team loaded with AAAA outfielders, you'd think we'd be able to get by.

Here's a better idea...

The Razor, or "jewish guy" as you refered to him, is our best hitter right now. Why would we move him down in the lineup? It makes more sense to keep him there, and work around him.

I'm working on writing a simulator, a la Diamond Mind, and at this stage, I'm keeping things as simple as possible. So the only hitter I've created is Fielder and the only pitcher I've created is Sheets. I feel bad for Ben, because the lineup full of Fielders really tees off on him.
