Game Thread #147: Can't Stop the Bleeding

We're falling in the standings and the game hasn't even started yet!

The Cubs beat the Cards 3-2 this afternoon, making the division lead 2 games.  They'll play again, so if everything breaks right, we'll end the day a game out.

Today it's Suppan vs. Saarloos.  If you do a google search for "Home Run Derby," you get this link.  C'mon people, Braun and Fielder have milestones to chase!

Go Brewers!

I hope Yost is gone, or that they've traded Hall.  I'm tired of watching him ride the bench, and it would be nice to see him play again.

They're winning right now, so all the losers are digging their Cubs gear back out of the trash bin they threw it in last week.

Uh, no, he hasn't.

Double switch
Nix wouldn't have had to come into the game here if Ned had just put Counsell in the ninth spot and Turnbow in the third spot to start the inning. Weird.
Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 8:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Even so
It's just weird that you wouldn't double-switch when you brought Counsell in, isn't it?
Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Beyond Weird.
This is wildly speculative, but I don't think he thought of it until he went to his cards on realizing he might have to pull T-Bow before the inning was over.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2007 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or maybe this, upon reflection
If Turnbow pitches his inning without problems you can send someone who is better with the bat than Counsell up for him in the bottom of the inning, whereas by double-switching you lock yourself in with Counsell.
Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That makes more sense...
... until you remember that when he was forced to make the call, he went with Nix.  (Again.)  Despite the strikeout, he may be right and I may be wrong, but I would have gone with just about anyone else.  I haven't seen anything out of Nix to suggest that he's going to be an effective pinch hitter this season, but Yost keeps running him out there in some fairly crucial situations.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2007 9:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
When he had to make the call it was for defense and I would guess Nix is a better option there than the other outfielders on the bench (Mench? Stocker?). Maybe not offensively, but with a lead I suppose defense is more important.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is Gwynn Jr. still nursing that hamstring then?
Because if he's healthy, I doubt Nix is a better defensive replacement than Gwynn Jr.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2007 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know
But I did forget Gwynn was also in the dugout. Hmm.
Daily Ryan Braun leaderboard watch and more at my blog, Recondite Baseball.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 9:49 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know either.
But I have been a bit curious why Nix seems to come off the bench so often when others who have some demonstrated success at this level, like Gwynn Jr., Hall or even Dillon, are available.  It is true that Hall has been getting pinch hit opportunities on a regular basis.  Just that they usually come after Nix has his.

Cards won, by the way.  Back to a one game deficit.  9-7 gets you 84 wins, which might be enough to win the division assuming the Cubs aren't going to win 4 out of 5 the rest of the way.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 15, 2007 10:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

My theory
I think Yost is trying to keep a few big bats in reserve. Or, he just likes Nix, and keeps wondering if he could get away with benching Hart for Nix next year.

by TheJay on Sep 15, 2007 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

9-6 I mean.
Since there's only 15 games left rather than 16.  I don't think it's likely at this point that less than 84 wins will secure the division, and it might take more.  Though with this race, you never know, I suppose.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 16, 2007 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i was wondering the same thing...
cause if we have gwynn healthy i would have had him in there defensively.

Alright
Let's be managerial. Now it's a two-run lead. Say Cordero goes out there and is wild to open the inning. Do you leave it in his hands or do you go to the pen? If you go to the pen, who do you bring in?

Remember, the guys left out there are Aquino, McClung, Spurling, Stetter, Vargas and Wise.

I'd lean towards keeping Coco in anyway,
but the list of alternatives clinches it.  If you've got to hook him for some reason, I'd probably go to Wise or Aquino, in that order, but I wouldn't be happy about either one.  Stetter is momentarily interesting with Griffey batting 2nd and Dunn 4th, but I don't think he's ready for prime time.

Question pour les trolls
If you're a Cubs fan during a pennant race and your team splits a doubleheader, how do you decide the proper level of panic to feel? I mean, if the Cubs sweep then you feel ecstatic and make grandiose claims of superiority and if they lose both you throw all your Cubs stuff in a garbage bag and either burn it or take it out to the street, right? If it's a split do you just have to decide whether to torch your jersey or your hat? Does it matter if they lose the first or second game?

Hmmm
It seems the n and the a have switched spots.  I'll have to have a talk to them about that.

It's weird to be in a division title race and also barely able to stay above .500.

The Dew Deck is kind of a fun place to watch a game, but you're pretty far from the action, so it's not as involving.  It's like you're watching the game on a really realistic television.
