Game Thread #149: Milwaukee (76-72) at Houston (65-84)

"You mean you can't take less. It's very easy to take more than nothing."

Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Star-divide

Yovani Gallardo goes up against Matt Albers, but the real news is that the Menchkins platoon is officially dead.  In a move that demonstrates Ned Yost has entirely embraced the voodoo of "hot hand" lineup composition, Joltin' Joe Dillon appears in left field, bringing his lifetime .299/.322/.448 hitting line to the second spot in the lineup.  That may be only 90 plate appearances, but they tell the whole story to Ned.

2B Rickie Weeks
LF Joe Dillon
3B Ryan Braun
1B Prince Fielder
CF Corey Hart
LF Gabe Gross
C Johnny Estrada
SS J.J. Hardy
RHP Yovani Gallardo

It makes you wonder....if there is no hot hand, who starts?

Just imagine
He could run out a Gross, Dillon, Hardy, Fielder, Hart, Estrada, Braun, Weeks lineup. That'd be lovely.

hmmmm
I hate to offload blame, but I copied and pasted that lineup from the jsonline blog, and so I'm not sure what to make of Gross and Dillon sharing left field.  At this point, I'm willing to believe that's correct, and Ned is playing a hunch that no balls will travel to right field tonight.

Do you really want to think of Ned Yost going past Dillon's locker and saying "You're with me, Leather?"

Assuming Gross is in right
This probably is the worst defensive lineup we can trot out there. Maybe a Counsell for Hardy switch but Hardy hasn't been great defensively this year. I actually am not completely against the lineup but I do wish Gross was batting second.  He has far superior on base skills than Dillon.

give a plea to bill hall. He's the one who needs to be playing better.  He hit 35 bombs last year.  If we could get any kind of glimpse of that power, maybe he'd be playing more.

Berkman was like that in our last series
I mean I thought he went on strike two but he probably was just upset the home plate ump called it.  Then he looks at a pitch right on the corner for strike three.  You have to be swinging at that with two runners on and a 0-2 count.

Just back from Milwaukee...
Back in Denver. Took my 10-month-old daughter to her first baseball game Saturday night at Miller Park. The Crew won, Fielder set the homer record, probably the best night of the year for me.

That homer by the way, frozen rope, I don't think Griffey even bothered to take a step.
