The Crying Game.
The season is over, sad but true,
Ned Yost and his decisions killed our beloved Brew Crew.
Gone is the pennant, lost to the Cubs,
lost to some bitches who piss in big tubs.
Burned by our '06 all-star, broken by our fragile ace,
Buried by our big signings, who took the dough and put stand-ins in their place.
So we'll take our bright spots, our ROY and our MVP,
leave Ned at the bus station, and hire Joe Girardi,
Send Jenkins packing, let Estrada jog his fat-ass somewhere else,
We'll be back in '08 to take the NL Central Pennant, like a mafioso cartel.
It's official.
WE HAVE BEEN YOSTED.
[editor's note, by Jeff] Worth a bump, don't you think?
I'm conceding. Unless the hand of god offers up a miracle, we've lost the Central to the fucking Cubs. Ah well. I'm not totally down in the dumps though. There were a lot of good things that came out of this season.
Here's some of my favorites:
And now for the disappointments:
And my hopes for next year:
- Outfield is:
(internal move) Hall, Gywnn, Hart
(external move) Hall, Andruw Jones, Hart
- Catcher is:
(internal move) Rivera everyday
(external move) You'd have to trade for someone. [no handsome FAs in my opinion]
- Closer is:
(internal move) Cordero if he'll take what we can offer
(external move) Trade for Scot Shields
- Callups include:
LaPorta (I know I'm reaching)
AND (drum roll please)
- Manager is:
NOT NED YOST
(external move): Girardi or LaRussa
(internal move): Kremblas or Yount
(surprise move): Tony Gwynn Sr.?
OKAY. And now, if our miracle doesn't happen, who are you guys going to support in the playoffs? It looks like it's going to be Red Sox, Yankees, Indians, Angels, Mets, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Padres.
I will be supporting the Angels and Mets because I love their styles of play (which I wish we played in Milwaukee). It's just so much damn fun watching fast teams who pound hits and steal bases.
[[ I expect the barrage of opposition, so let it fly ]]

i like the poem
suppan, also, while he could be inconsistent, has never missed a start (so, i don't quite get the standin line or money one) i mean, we all or most of us knew suppan was most likely overpaid and that he was an average pitcher. after all, we got him for his presence and experience for the postseason.
i don't know why, but i'd love to see kremblas manage this team--though i know nothing about him other than his success with us in the minors. and, i've wavered on gwynn, i'd rather see someone else out there in the OF, but i'm not sure who.
Moving on.
I can't believe people still want Gwynn to start . . .
That said, I don't think we can expect the same from Hardy next year, and I don't think we can expect the same from Hall -- there's probably a flip flop waiting to happen there, though I'd love to see 25+ HR from both of them.
I'd love to see Estrada disappear. The fact that the Braves announcers were saying it really hurt the Brewers chances if he was hurt shows how much he's overrated. His defense is awful, baserunning worse, and his OBP is a joke. I'm surprised he had as positive VORP at all (it was like 3.2).
I got no problem with Jenks moving on either. When you go up there hacking every time, how can I take you seriously?
I'd keep Hall in CF and let Gross take Jenkins' spot in the LF platoon.
You forgot to mention Rickie's monster August and September as a positive. I'm more excited about him than anything. He had a higher VORP than JJ, and sports the best plate discipline on the team.
I wouldn't be opposed to kicking the tires on Andruw Jones, but I'd like them to do the same on Schilling. He wants to sign a one year deal. I think that would be great -- like 1 year, $14mil or something.
Andrew Jones
I like the Gross in the LF platoon idea; though he'd be a downgrade in the field and with the bat, he's cheaper and I think the team can deal with it. Or we could just go after free agent to be Brady Clark (how crazy is it he is beginning and ending the season in Miller Park without actually being on the roster?).
If Yost is kept for next season, it'd be nice to sign Milton Bradley to spite/cold-cock him.
Oh, and because I'm too lazy to make a whole new comment just for this: I really like the poem/dirge.
Maybe it's just me

no andrew jones...
Gross
Also, if folks want to give Gwynn a chance, why not cut Mench and have him Gwynn platoon with Gross? I'm not sure if Gwynn has anything of a platoon split, though, while Gross and Mench clearly do.
Love the Milton Bradley idea, btw, Jay. Maybe we can trade for Sheff, too. ;-)
Also, I'll concede on Andruw. I think it would be a waste, really, especially since I expect LaPorta to have a Braun-like break-out in 2009. I'm OK with Gross/Mench/Gwynn in the meantime.
Actually that is not all

A scary thought
That will be one grumbly day.
Hall
Anyway, I think Billy got screwed over this year, but since I'm a huge Billy fan, I won't bother to go into details. It'll just sound like rationalization.
I think Melvin needs to make some moves this offseason, and probably pursue some players aggressively, instead of waiting to see which players become available. As good as our young players are, our old players are not worth much.
Jenkins will either leave, or the Brewers will pass on his option and re-sign him for $3 or 4 million. I like Geoff, but I think it's probably time for the Brewers to move on. Zero interest in keeping Mench.
Gross should be around next year, but I'm not ready to give him the job in left field. It'd be nice if Melvin could find a decent power-hitting left fielder on the free agent market (not a giant-headed one :). Outfield of New Guy, Bill Hall and Corey Hart.
The infield is set. No problem there.
The rotation is going to need a little help. Sheets, Suppan, Gallardo, Villanueva and Bush look like a nice rotation to start the year. Definitely keep Parra in the mix, since we've seen that the Brewers can definitely use 6 or 7 starting pitchers throughout the year.
I think Cordero is going to move on, because the money he can make is not money the Brewers should spend on a closer. The rest of the bullpen needs to be re-worked, and I think that's where Melvin's biggest challenge resides.
Anyway, it's all moot if they keep Yost. He'll lobby for more gritty veterans and his personal favorites. If Yost is gone, then younger players may get a shot, and lefty specialists can go back to being lefty specialists.

Ack!

I (dis)agree.
In terms of LF on the market: there are none. The OF available are Hunter, Jones, and mush. Under optimum conditions, I'd look at Adam Dunn -- like if we could get him for two years $25mil for some reason. If not, I'd stay in house with Gross, because there's not much better out there.
If there's nothing, then there's nothing

Outfield Responses
Certainly I understand all of your thoughts on having someone with more power... But I'm speaking from the baseball I like... Small ball... In my opinion we have enough power with Price, Braun (and hopefully Hall again next year)... I want guys scampering around the bases.
I agree about Gwynn
Way to many or their home runs this year were solo shots
Ok... I'm holding off Assessments until...
Look, It ain't over until that board on MLB.com says E next to us. We may be in a really deep hole, but frankly, we still got a shot. It's the cubs remember. They can still falter, we can still take it. Granted we need to go 8-0 and they need to go 3-4 for a tie, but stranger things have happened.
Notes for Ned:
NEVER take Braun out.
Never f*cking take Braun out.
I'm sure there are more, but I'm just upset over that recurring incident.

Yes... WE NEED THE...
I'm not giving up. I'm just facing reality.
I'll be at home watching again tonight... Hoping we win all week this week. Don't think otherwise!
I would just like to take this time
Could you imagine where this team would be if our "'06 All-Star" had managed to go like 9-11 in his last 20 starts? Is that really too much to ask?
I don't care if he ever throws another useless pitch in a Brewers uniform. Im so f'ing sick of fastball/changeup/0 velocity/Nibble guys like Crappy & Wise.
R.I.P-'07 Brewers (Born April 2nd-Died...Sometime in September) Survived by thousands of fans and members of this blog. Services are held every day at your local tavern.
disagree
projected fip: 4.25 - 4.52, actual fip: 4.46
babip: .341
he threw 220 innings in '05 and '06, so not surprisingly his walks are up. And what can you do with a .341 babip, just bad luck. His line drives are even done this year from his great '06. His OPS against was higher due to the extra walks but the slugging was probably better than expected given his babip.
He had a decent season.
If you're going to go and try to blame one player for a disappointing 162 game season... well... i guess i would suggest you don't.
Personally, it's clear to me that the priorities are (#1) defense needs to get better, and (#2) we need one or two more reliable high leverage pitchers, and they need to be used properly.
I'm OK w/ sticking up for him...
I know there's some luck and all that involved, but c'mon he has a little something to do with those numbers, doesn't he? The walks alone were enough to anger me.....perhaps his pitches were just a bit more "hit-able".
Of the 20 pitchers that show stats on the Brewers stat page, Crappy is currently in a tie for 15th place with a WHIP of 1.50. He is tied w/ Ray King. Vargas is the only starter with a worse WHIP, but in his defense he was much cheaper. Also, the other guys below Chris are guys named Balfour, Aquino, & McClung. That's not good company, and I would call that a good season. Luck be damned.
Again, don't mind me, I'm still working through some very profound Brewer frustration right now.:(
Correction:
no worries
I know there's some luck and all that involved, but c'mon he has a little something to do with those numbers, doesn't he?
Depends on which numbers you are talking about. Hits? Not so much. Walks? Absolutely.
Here's a good way to look at it. When the ball is put in play what happens to it depends on Luck, Pitching Skill, Defense, and Park Factors. And it works out to be close enough to be 40%/30%/20%/10% respectively.
Here's the qualified NL leaders in FIP. Cappy had a decent season.
can we start lobbying for Ted Simmons???
we should have made that life-sized sexy mark attanasio cutout...
awesome job catalyst. (we will have several months to discuss off-season moves. i dont have the energy right now...)
Thanks
And he wouldn't put up with Estrada... Getting rid of his lazy ass would be his 1st priority.
Nothing against Ted
Assuming there is a next manager.

Me too
I think someone young, and from outside the organization, would be good.
(Though I just can't give up the ball and glove logo.)
hmmm this is where I came in here lol
No more Retro uniforms no more looking back. as much as the way this season ended sucked. this team still has a bright future IF Yost is removed and they can do something to fix the bullpen.
Lets start looking towards the future in Milwaukee.
Retro
marty..
im not recommending ted solely cause he was a brewer. he knows about baseball without having to read books on it in the offseason. listening to him talk on the radio during one of the games this season got me interested in him.
and he hates nascar. i know this for a fact (not really).
yeah, i know
Then again, all I know about his baseball philosophy comes from 10 minutes of interview with Bill Schroeder.

This might sound sacrilegious (sp.)
No, I felt that too
- Yost makes an odd decision
- Said decision backfires
- Yost is asked about it in the post-game
- Yost says something along the lines of "I'm not going to play that game of being second-guessed," or "Baseball people knew what I was doing," or "Hey, let's put an ottoman in the dugout," or whatever.
I"m confused
Lessons from other teams
The main thing to take from the Cubs though is plan on the 2008 roster not having Ben Sheets. It sounds odd because he'll be on the team, but since his status has become as flaky as Prior/Wood, we have to plan on not having him. Our 2008 rotation:
- Gallardo
- Suppan
- Villanueva
- Bush
- Capuano/Parra/Vargas
Last, we should hire a defensive guru to work with our younger players. Critical errors have led to critical losses. We have a 3D puzzle of the Big Ben here while the Cubs are dealing with a 2D version. We just need a few minor pieces to be added and a better person putting the puzzle together to dominate this division.

Eh
One thing, though. As bad as our pen had been this season, in recent years, it was the only good thing about our team, even only a few years ago. We've made some pretty good strides since the days of Jerry Royster and Davey Lopes.
Weigh-ins
On Cordero: I'd love to see him resigned, but at 10-12 mil per, it's not really financially feasible for them to do so.
On Yost: Sure, he's made some moves that have left me scratching my head, but it's not him who's hanging a slider that costs them a win.
On Cappy: He's this year's Turnblow.
To srB: Lucky you. My brother and I are die-hards who, every year, would put our hopes in the ill-advised trades and free agent signings. For example, O.K., the Brewers signed Jeffrey Hammonds, and if so-and-so and so-and-so are able to build on last year's performance, we should at least compete. During those years, it'd look like they were "going through the motions" by the middle of May and have me only watching a few games the rest of the way. BTW, Bando & Taylor were morons.
To Catalyst: I agree a little small ball wouldn't hurt. If that's the way shake out, with Gwynn getting most of the playing time in left or center, it would be nice to see a lineup shown below. BTW, don't forget abut Hart's power.
Weeks 2B
Gwynn LF/CF
Braun 3B
Fielder 1B
Hart RF
Hall CF/LF
Rivera/Miller? C
Hardy SS
P
Estrada should go, as should Mench & Jenkins ideally. I'd say either Cappy or Vargas will be gone, if not both. After all, ya have to open at least one spot for Gallardo/Villanueva/Parra, don't ya? Heck, I thought CV earned a rotation spot with his stint late last year, but what do I know?
Are we sure
Well...
Also - it's not funny to even joke about LaRussa being our manager. I'd rather lose with Yost.
Hart & LaRussa
Notes
(I must say that the only thing that is giving me hope right now for the rest of our season is that it is the Cubs we're talking about. They are the masters of the collapse. If any team can out-collapse the Brewers, it is the Cubs. So maybe we still do have a shot at the playoffs.)
You list Koskie under disappointments. I hope you don't mean disappointed in him. After he didn't come back at all last year and wasn't even doing regular activities in September 2006, I was just hoping he'd be able to have a regular life with his family again, which hasn't happened as of yet. Forget baseball, I just hope he's able to get a normal life back. If anything I was disappointed in Mustache for appearing to rely on Koskie coming back. But of course things did work out at 3B, with that Braun guy.
i tend to give moustache credit
After all, it would've looked pretty silly to sign a more expensive 3B by about July.
(Then again, it looked pretty silly to let Graffy come back, but we've been over that a few times :).)
