Jason Kendall Projected

As a community, the bcb projection is more optimistic about Jason Kendall than marcel, zips, and chone.

Interestingly though, we are more pessimistic on the playing time. Estrada last year played in 120 games, and under Ned Yost, regular rest for the 'full time' catcher seems to be standard operating procedure. One of those things that the community can see that these projection systems cannot. We are also optimistic about his walk and contact rates having seen a big change in him between Oakland and Chicago and knowing that he's had eye surgery in the off-season.

I have a hunch that Nedgar will fall in love with Kendall's heart and grittiness and let him play as much as possible.

And hey

If he's a great influence on the pitching staff, that's not a bad thing either. Well timed past home runs aside, I can't see how starting Mike Rivera and/or Eric Munson for forty games is a better option.

It'll be interesting

to see how well he throws out runners. He's been pretty good over his career and doesn't have a steady decline that would suggest age being the major factor. He is 33 which isn't all that old, but as they say, it ain't the years, it's the miles and he has a lot of catcher miles.

Playing time

The projection systems are picking up on the fact that, when healthy and not completely sucking, Kendall has been in the 600-700 PA range every year (2007 and 1999, the year of the horrific ankle injury, being the only exceptions). I'm willing to bet if he is truly seen as a "great game-caller" and the pitchers want to throw to him, his body is still capable of that kind of playing time.
