Game Thread #23: Brewers (14-7) @ Royals (10-10)

Manny Parra is scheduled to face Brett Tomko and the Royals in a night game, broadcast in 400k Grit-O-Vision by mlb.tv at 8:05 pm CDT.  I am not aware of any perceived slights or irritations related to the Royals, so maybe Ned will send some major league players out there behind Parra tonight.

You know the biblical story of Solomon and that baby he chopped in half?  I have a similar dilemma tonight.  The Brewer game starts at 8:05, but since that's my kids' bed time, that's also my MLB 2k8 time.  I just don't know whether to play the game or watch the game.

Decisions, decisions.

No such thing as bad publicity
Ned's getting his name out there.  Unfortunately, it's as the woman having a hissy fit.

Not that it matters
But as of right now, the Brewers are tied with the Mets among NL teams for best record (judging by Win %).

Then again, the Marlins are up there too.

Overall, in the Cactus League, we're just behind "first place" Oakland.

Too bad for the "Tempe flu"
If any starters had faced the Angels, the team might be in first!

On a serious note, too bad for Randy Choate, breaking his hand on golden boy LaPorta's helmet.

related news
choate was traded for john patterson. patterson, today, was released by the Nationals.  I don't know where he stands on his comeback from injury, but i wouldn't mind the brewers taking picking him up for minor league depth.

unfortunately
Suppan is a starter, and Turnbow and Gagne are first teamers.

First place is nice
and it feels good for a while, up to the moment where you decide to look over to the AL standings and see woeful Tampa Bay on top all year.  Some teams just play for different reasons in the spring.

Bush moved off of Parra's day to pitch...
... Haudricourt suggested that might mean they're both making the rotation.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Mar 20, 2008 4:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Good news and bad news
That's probably good for Parra, good for Bush, and bad for Villy.  Assuming this is the starting rotation when the season starts:

Sheets
Suppan
Vargas
Bush
Parra

Villy starts the season in AAA and Capuano starts the season on the Dessens DL.

Bush and Vargas are probably not going to pitch well.  I know, I'm going out on a limb there.  So, when Gallardo returns from DL, it will probably be one of them being moved to make room.  Then, something will need to be done with Capuano--if he isn't traded, then he'll probably be brought back to Milwaukee.

Where does that leave Carlos?  Pitching in AAA until at least 2, and maybe 3 or the Brewers starting pitchers fail off the big league roster.  That's not good for anyone.

Cappy rehabs in AAA
The question is whether he'll be able to get PCL batters out. If not, then what?

I don't have much faith in Bush, but his pattern is to have lots of innings that are good with a nightmare inning in the 1st or 5th/6th. At least that's my recollection. Conceivably, if he only has a couple of those innings, he'll hang on a while.

Vargas pitched well for about 20 starts. He's pitched well so far during ST.

by ol Pete on Mar 20, 2008 5:42 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Needs to get the innings in
Vargas needs to consistently work 6 or more innings.  If he pitches effectively, but taxes the bullpen again this year then something will need to be done about him.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 20, 2008 5:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed.
But I can't see him doing that, which is why I can't believe they're seriously thinking about keeping him in the rotation when they have viable alternatives.  Eating innings is why Bush is still part of the equation and why he'll probably end up starting.

Gritty fan's dream
Two infield singles, a stolen base, and a ground ball into left scores a run for the Royals.

Maybe a good game
for spring training. Three grounders for hits and a bloop. Now dig in and get the inning over.

Wild pitch and a walk don't sound good though.

Did you see what Rich Hill did today.

Sheesh
Even with the defensive middle infield, there have been a lot of ground ball singles.

That pitch to Braun wasn't that bad. Braun just went down and clobbered it. That kid is going to be amazing.

Counsell
So did his offensive improvements this spring training come with a corresponding drop in defense?
