Game Thread #27: Rockies (11-10) @ Brewers (16-9)

Manny Parra takes the mound against the Rockies today with four actual regulars in the lineup.  Unless Manny gives up 12 home runs and then pees on Ned's Dale Earnhardt "God Needed a Driver" sticker, his spot in the starting rotation is probably locked in.

While it's never good to have a player out for physical reasons, with JJ Hardy still out of the lineup with unexplained weight loss, we get to see some more Escobar today.  He's just fun to watch.

Star-divide

2B Rickie Weeks
CF Tony Gwynn Jr.
1B Prince Fielder
LF Ryan Braun
RF Corey Hart
3B Joe Dillon
SS Alcides Escobar
LHP Manny Parra
C Jason Kendall

If Parra's in
what happens when Yo comes back?

And I'm right with you looking forward to seeing Alcides.

Either Bush or Vargas go
I don't know where they go, but they'll need to go somewhere.  I guess if Manny has a rough start to the season, that will give Melvin an excuse to send him down to AAA, but if he's pitching well, then Yo is going to displace whichever of Bush or Vargas has performed the worst.

Hey, what do I know
but based on all the comments up till now, I just don't see that happening. I guess we'll all know before long.

Speaking of Parra, his one bad outing had a bunch of infield hits and I heard a radio guy yesterday say that the infields in Arizona are rock hard and that creates more infield hits. So with a change in conditions and/or a little better luck, he wouldn't have even had that bad outing.

Hard to believe opening day is a week away and there is snow on the ground here.

And
We are opening the year in freezing Chicago while a perfectly good dome collects dust.

by brewfan2 on Mar 24, 2008 12:48 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Silver lining
Wrigley probably won't be as disgusting as usual, since the urine will probably be frozen solid, and the rats hibernating.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 12:54 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

A couple days ago
the ex-governor of Illinois, Thompson I think, said while discussing the future of Wrigley, something like "in some ways Wrigley is a dump."

How hilarious.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 1:28 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yuck
I saw 2 games there last year, and you definitely don't want to leave your seat for any reason.  The other huge downside is that there's no info board, so if you're interesting in anything like pitch counts, you're out of luck.

On the plus side, since there's no big display, there's no stupid between-innings contests or distractions.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 1:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

My bet
They will wait on bringing Yo back until Cameron can play and send two position players down, giving Yost 8 guys to screw up using in the bullpen.

Or if JJ doesn't improve soon he starts the season on the DL and Grit on a stick is the starting SS on opening day leaving room for 13 pitchers on the roster.

by Joe on Mar 24, 2008 12:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

ack!
You just killed my pleasant daydream where Escobar opened the season on the MLB roster and played SS for a couple weeks.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 12:52 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sorry to be a buzzkill
On a more pleasant note, I saw that Dusty was saying really positive things about Corey Patterson in CF with the implication being he will see a lot of playing time.  So with Dusty still the same old Dusty, no worries about the Reds challenging and making it a three team race.

The obvious answer
Move Rickie Weeks to shortstop!!  Who's with me?!?!
"I will agree that the attitude [at BCB] is ridiculous and they have done so much to instigate animosity and then block us from responding. Real mature!"

Now what will I do while I'm supposed to be working?

Got a Colorado guy helping in the booth.

parra's off to a rocky start
see what I did there?  ha!

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:13 PM CDT   0 recs

Braun
Makes a nice running catch.

(Trying to think positive here)

by drezdn on Mar 24, 2008 3:18 PM CDT   0 recs

Damnit
And then he follows it up with a bad leap.

by drezdn on Mar 24, 2008 3:20 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

glad its spring training
Parra is really struggling.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:22 PM CDT   0 recs

poor Manny
now he has to get a talking to by Yost.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:25 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

well
does this at all affect his "lock" status?

by goirish2107 on Mar 24, 2008 3:24 PM CDT   0 recs

sticker
It all depends on whether he's showing respect to the Earnhardt sticker.

1st inning play by Dillon
With one out and the bases loaded, the ball was hit to dillon at third.  The Rockies player got a late jump and then headed home, and not only did Dillon not throw home, but he actually double-clutched and almost didn't get the runner at first.  That was the first run of the game, and while Parra had plenty of his own problems, he didn't need that foolishness.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:33 PM CDT   0 recs

either throw home or go to second right away
looked like he could have got the home plate guy.

There was a list of excuses on the locker room door in high school. I suggest that Joe use either 'girlfriend too friendly' or 'girlfriend not friendly enough.' And then have a cup of coffee.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:37 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

dillon
double pumped to not hit the rockies player in the head.  i agree he should have thrown home, or at least touched third first, kept the double play an option.  but, parra got rocked after that, from the mlbtv feed looked right down the middle, hit hard.

by goirish2107 on Mar 24, 2008 3:36 PM CDT   0 recs

yeah
No excuses for Parra on that first inning.  He's a young guy, and can use better help behind him.

2nd inning worked out better for him.  Walk, steal, and then a flyout to center as the runner attempted another steal.  Easy double play.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:43 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

walk and an easy steal
sometimes things work out, but he still looks a little rattled.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Tight strike zone
for both pitchers.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:47 PM CDT   0 recs

parra draws a walk
According to BA, it's due to Ned's lineup genius.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:48 PM CDT   0 recs

if someone can get a hit
Parra can run off some of that adrenalin.

Simmons looks like he belongs in a Cheech and Chong movie.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:50 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Parra quote
"I just have to learn from it and move on. If I go out next time and show them it was a fluke, that's more important than anything. It's how you bounce back."

He'll be fine!!!!

by SwampBuck on Mar 24, 2008 3:49 PM CDT   0 recs

ha
Well, at least Kendall's GDP tendencies are intact.  Rockies screw it up and only get the runner at second.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:51 PM CDT   0 recs

That was a nice double by Escobar
I wonder what the chances are he makes the team if Hardy isn't ready for opening day. I know I would love to see this guy up for a week as a little preview of what's to come, but I would agree that the gritster will most likely get the starts.
"He's been very, very impressive," Yost said. "I mean really impressive. I mean really, really impressive."

by MadJimiBrewha on Mar 24, 2008 3:51 PM CDT   0 recs

the mighty Tulowitzki
bobbles one. In the first inning Ricky's grounder was only a couple feet from the 2nd base bag. If he was as good as his press clippings, he should've got that... actually got them both.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 3:52 PM CDT   0 recs

another good at-bat from Rickie
I hope he carries it into the season.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 3:54 PM CDT   0 recs

It's Rickie day!
Nice defensive play to tag the runner, and then go to first for 2.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 4:03 PM CDT   0 recs

hahaha
BA talking up Braun's defense in left.  Must not have seen the first inning.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 4:07 PM CDT   0 recs

Mota's in
to start the 4th.  Parra just had an at-bat to end the 3rd, so this seems odd.  Maybe Ned just didn't care to pinch-hit in a meaningless game.

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 4:17 PM CDT   0 recs

ha, nice reference
Mota used to be Gagne's setup guy in LA.  What else do they have in common?

by Marty McSuperFly on Mar 24, 2008 4:21 PM CDT   0 recs

Escobar
Kendall just threw a ball a bit off of second and Escobar managed to keep it from rolling into the outfield. I like that guy.

by drezdn on Mar 24, 2008 4:26 PM CDT   0 recs

he doesn't look as skinny
as he was made out to be.

Since the Brewers screwed up
my ticket package order, and aren't being proactive in resolving the situation, I'm thinking of just keeping the vastly better tickets I have in my possession.  They fucked up, and don't seem to care, why should I care?

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Mar 24, 2008 5:54 PM CDT   0 recs

are you sure
that they sent you the wrong tickets?  maybe the screw-up is that they overcharged your credit card?

by roguejim on Mar 24, 2008 6:13 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

yeah
They're some other dude's tickets.  Different name, different address printed on the "receipt" ticket.

I was charged properly.

by Dikembe Meiztombo on Mar 24, 2008 6:24 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

When you first talked about it
and the other guy wasn't calling you back, I thought it would turn out that he had better tickets.

If they are better, it'll get straightened out without you doing anything.

by ol Pete on Mar 24, 2008 6:49 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't have his phone #
Can't find it.  Dude lives in a near by apt, though.  The only thing is, I don't know if he has my tickets.

Featured Poll

Poll
Who is the Brewers' top prospect?
  • Brett Lawrie - Cana-DUH!
  • Mat Gamel - A great pure hitter who could potentially play a position of need.
  • Alcides Escobar - The Brewers sorely need his defensive wizardry and contact-hitting approach. He also solves the 3B hole by shifting J.J. over.
  • Jonathan Lucroy - The best catching prospect in the system by virtue of the fact that he can actually catch. His hitting numbers at Brevard are very good on the face of it, but even better after accounting for Space Coast Stadium.
  • Angel Salome - He's leading a Huntsville team that's loaded with prospects in all three slash stats, and he has the tools to be a good defensive catcher.
  • Jeremy Jeffress - The only real pitching prospect in a sea of hitters, Jeffress could potentially ease the pain of losing two aces by blossoming into one himself.
  • Carlos George - Hey, Derek Jeter can't play defense either.
