Tuesday's Frosty Mug

So today's intro is going to be even less witty than yesterday. Not only do I not have a clever one-liner, I didn't even get drunk dialed last night. So, today we're going straight into the reads:

If you missed any of yesterday's games and would like them encapsulated in two sentences or less, Baseball Digest Daily has you covered.

Maybe Prince's contract status has inspired him to work to improve more than I expected. Yesterday, for example, he broke out a new technique: the helicopter.

I'm a firm believer that we, as Brewer fans, spend way too much time talking about 1982. With that said, it's good to see Gorman Thomas and Robin Yount in camp. I was almost named after Gorman Thomas. Come to think of it, GTSnow does have a ring to it.

Yesterday's "(Young Player) wants to make team" story was about Manny Parra. Today's is about Tony Gwynn.

Scott over at In-Between Hops handicaps pitchers' chances to make the rotation. I think he's overrating Vargas a bit, but aside from that I pretty much agree with his analysis.

BrewersNation is doing player profiles to preview the season. As of yesterday, he rated every Brewer position player as above average or better. He's since downgraded Bill Hall to average, but I think it's worth a poll: see below.

Beyond the Box Score thinks Corey Hart is the most underrated player in baseball, and has a nice chart to illustrate it.

If Prince fielder is still angry over his contract situation, today he can call Jeff Francoeur to commiserate.

Alphabetical injury reports in one line or less:

AJ Burnett has a torn fingernail that's keeping him from throwing curveballs this spring.
Bobby Crosby missed Monday's game with back spasms.
Met Ruben Gotay injured his ankle and is getting a CT scan (?). I think they meant MRI.
Orlando Hernandez still can't throw the banana.
John Lackey probably won't be ready for Opening Day for the Angels.
Matt Mantei's attempted return in Tigers camp may be cut short due to a sore shoulder.
D-Backs P Micah Owings missed Monday's scheduled start with a sore shoulder.
Alfonso Soriano's finger injury will keep him out longer than the predicted 3-5 days.
Mariners DH Jose Vidro has a sore right elbow.

A couple of weeks ago the Reds signed (and later released) Craig Wilson, and I said that Dusty Baker was back to himself, signing veterans to block his young talent. Yesterday, in what Redleg Nation called Invasion of the "Dusty Guys," the Reds signed Corey Patterson AND Jerry Hairston, in the same day.

On a former Brewer note: It wasn't that long ago that Jeff Bennett was a candidate to close for the Brewers. Today, he's fighting for a spot on the team in Atlanta.

This shouldn't be shocking, but it is news: The Dodgers' traveling roster for China is...well, missing some people.

With Kyle Lohse still on the market and trades likely available, the Cardinals have decided instead to try out Sidney Ponson. Seriously, how many second chances does this guy get?

Home Run Derby lists the top ten ballpark promotions of 2008. No Brewer promotions listed, but Joe Mauer Fishing Lure Day is only a short road trip away.

I'll close with an anecdote. A few years ago, when Brandon Wood was in the Midwest League (low-A), he played his home games in Cedar Rapids, where I frequently catch games. My fiancee fell in love with him and developed an elaborate scheme to leave me for him. This morning, I sent her this story about Wood's attempts to break camp with the Angels. She had completely forgotten who he was. Her baseball attention span is pretty short.

Drink up.

Lohse
I wonder what he is (and has been) asking for to make teams shy away from him. You'd think somebody would've signed him by now--I wonder if he'll open the season on anyone's roster. That'd be depressing, working for years to get to cash in on the free agent market and no one comes calling.

I'm sure the Cardinals looked at Ponson because he's cheaper than Lohse and they don't have to give up a player in a trade.

Thanks
I'm loving these frosty mug updates. Keep em coming.

Did anyone else see that Adam McCalvy called Suppan's performance yesterday "Solid" : 2IP 3H 2ER

That performance is not horrible but I don't see it deserving a "Solid" headline.

Matt Mantei is still around? I'm surprised he doesn't need surgery already.

Watching Yovani pitch probably compares to driving a Lamborghini Gallardo.

LaRussa
Man I don't like Muttley LaRussa.

Given that Suppan wasn't all that close with his inside pitch to Muttley's pet, I wonder if he was drinking when the whole melodrama happened.

I hope
Bennett does well, just not against us again.

Dodgers
Too bad about the roster missing some people - I think Jeff Kent in China would give the MLB PR people something to do.

No wonder Ned is so jittery
Um, Ned drinks about 25 cups of coffee a day?!

From Monday camp report

Cactus Juice: In the game Sunday against the Angels, first baseman Prince Fielder's glove was knocked off by a hard, high liner. Fielder scrambled without his glove to pick up the ball and record the out. Asked what he thought of that play, manager Ned Yost had to admit that he didn't see it. "I was getting a cup of coffee (in the dugout)," said Yost, who drinks about 25 cups a day. "I was turned around, pumping the coffee (container) and I heard it and turned around and saw Prince covering first base. Everybody was going nuts. I missed it. They told me it was a great play."

Gotta love that quote: "I missed it. They told me it was a great play."

ned needs an intervention :)

I'd just like to point out
what a good day it is to be a Brewers/Bears fan

by SunglassesAtNight on Mar 4, 2008 11:32 AM CST   0 recs

Really?
You must have missed the report today that showed the bears were 7-9 and finished the NFC central in last place. At least the bears re-signed orton and grossman.

Good news for packers
Da Bears re-signing Gross Rexman is better news for the Packers than Favre retiring is for the Bears.

BrewersNation poll
Hey KL. Thanks for the link to my site...even if you're implying that I'm very wrong. :)

I would also like to point out that Jason Kendall and Bill Hall are not rated above-average.  As our lineup is consistently talked about as one of the best in the major leagues, I would find it tough to downgrade anyone to below average.  That is, unless Rickie Weeks decides he wants to play like he did the first 3/4ths of the season.  Then he may be downgraded...to say the least.

I don't think...
you're VERY wrong. Just slightly off. I think your glasses are a bit rose-colored.

Also glad to see you're posting about the Corey Hart link, as well. Where'd you hear about that one? ;)

haha
I just woke up a little later than you this morning KL ;)  Beyond the Box Score is always one of my morning stops.

I'll admit that I'm an optimist at heart.  Nothing too wrong with that.

Best ballpark promotions
Did they add a new day to the month of June?  When is June [sunglasses smiley face] anyway?  It must be something to do with the leap year.
