Thursday's Frosty Mug

So I got in from the road at 2 am and woke up at 7:30. It's not really an excuse, I'm just saying, if at some point I drop off to skvajd;klvjad;sv, just assume I've had too many Frosty Mugs.

Some notes today from the 154 ouncer:

You want a roundup of all of yesterday's games from Baseball Digest Daily? Done.

Luft on Deck is our latest genius who thinks he could be a GM. He would've just paid Prince the league minimum and moved on. I'm sure that'd work.

U.S.S. Mariner notes that every team's 2008 media guide is online at MLB.com. That's a nice touch.

Baseball Prospectus ranks the Brewers 13th in their organizational rankings. Why 13, you ask?

When you add players like Ryan Braun and Yovani Gallardo to the big leagues, you're allowed to be drop down a bit.
They obviously put a lot of thought into it.

Team officials are working to make sure Mike Cameron doesn't get bored during his 25-game suspension. I understand the thought, but he's serving a drug suspension. This is like saying you want to make sure high schoolers don't get bored in detention.

Something doesn't smell right here: The Brewers are talking about carrying 13 pitchers to start the season. That means one less spot is available, but Abraham Nunez is confident he has a spot on the bench.

The day in pictures:

That's not a very good bat, Tony.
Prince Fielder, still motivated to try new things in camp this spring, tries out Craig Counsell's batting stance.
Ryan Braun finally makes a nice catch in left, and in the caption they still call him a third baseman. Ouch.

Baseball Analysts looks at the rookies who could make an impact in the NL Central in 2008. Parra and LaPorta are the two Brewers.

Alphabetical injury reports in one line or less:

Moises Alou is having hernia surgery and will be out until May, when he turns 52.
Rocco Baldelli will DH in more spring training games, but still can't play the outfield.
Orlando Hernandez can finally throw the banana!
Rockies P Jason Hirsh was scratched from his appearance with shoulder soreness.
Scott Kazmir has moved on to "phase 3" of his rehab, and may throw a bullpen session soon.
Jeff Kent pulled a hamstring in yesterday's game.
Dodgers P Hong-Chih Kuo was scratched from his start with soreness in his surgically repaired elbow.
Marlins P Scott Olsen was scratched from his start with shoulder tendinitis.
White Sox OF Jerry Owens pulled his groin in an intrasquad game weeks ago. It's still bothering him.
White Sox OF Carlos Quentin is recovering slower than expected from offseason shoulder surgery.
Dmitri Young reported to Nats camp near 300 pounds, and is still battling diabetes.

I remember when times were this desperate for the Brewers: Brady Clark, based on his .360 average in 22 spring training ABs, is getting a shot to play first base for the Mets.

My head hurts. Drink up.

Media guides
The White Sox, Reds, Rockies, Tigers, Marlins, Royals, Angels, Brewers, Twins, Athletics, Mariners, and Rays have their new guide up, but the rest of the teams still have their 2007 guides posted. I like the arrogant "2008 Postseason Guide" title the Brewers used. The MLB Pressbox site has been around for a couple seasons now and it's kind of neat, if you're into game notes and/or big pictures of major league managers, or Ned Yost.

I would guess Nunez's quote about not getting to the point of opting out has more to do with realizing injuries happen than making the club out of spring training. There doesn't seem to be much point for the club to carry him and Counsell unless one of them is starting due to injury.

Nedgar
From the coach/player guide:

Wears uniform number "3" as a tribute to his close friend, the late Dale Earnhardt.....worked on Earnhardt's pit crew as a re-hydration engineer  during occasional NASCAR races

Excessive use of periods in the ellipsis aside, that's great.  Nedgar was a "re-hydration engineer!"

He probably got fired...
for leaving the ice in the cup too long.

Not really
But he wouldn't use the best water until lap 240.

Actually...
He got fired for giving the driver antifreeze instead of water.  When asked to justify his decision, he replied:

I just put the liquid in the cup.  I can't do the refreshing.  If antifreeze can't do the job it's not my fault.

Ryan Braun's catch
if that is the one that is shown in the video highlight, he actually misplays it slightly and jumps to grab it as Cameron arrives. At least that is what it looked like.

Sad Year for Wisconsin Sports Fans
Not only did Brett Favre retire today, we also let his look-alike Geoff Jenkins go over the off-season.

Who on the Brewers looks like KGB?

Now that it's over, how will you remember the Brewers' season?
  • A rousing success. They made the playoffs, something they hadn't done since before many bloggers here were born.
  • Mostly satisfying. If you'd told me 90 wins and a playoff berth at the beginning of the year, I'd have taken it, but the limp the finish took some of the sparkle off.
  • Great on its own, but downgraded after accouting for context; with Sabathia and Sheets most likely having thrown their last pitch for the team, the Brewers may have blown their golden opportunity.
  • I'm left feeling unfulfilled. I think the team was capable of a lot more than it showed. With a healthy Sheets, who knows how far they go?
  • They're the crappiest bunch of crap that ever crapped.
