No surprises here. Gamel was also optioned to 3A, and Wes Littleton cleared waivers, which will open up a spot on the 40-man for Chris Duffy.
W: Jeff Suppan (1-0) L: Carlos Zambrano (0-1) Suppan struck out 3 and walked none in his three innings. Narveson, Villanueva, Swindle, and Wright shut out the Cubs through the remaining 6 innings. Wright had the only walk of the day. The two runs scored on a Mike Lamb groundball that was thrown past first base for an error by Carlos Zambrano. J.J. Hardy also had his yearly triple, aided by Alfonso Soriano jumping over the foul wall in left field. He returned to the field of play and was not able to get the ball and fire to third in time.
He had a cortisone shot today, hopefully that clears things up. With Salome nursing a stiff back, Rivera out and Vinny Rottino catching for Italy in the WBC, the Brewers are down to Jason Kendall, Jonathan Lucroy, Carlos Corporan and Martin Maldonado are the only catchers remaining on the spring roster.
Via McCalvy: The Brewers did pass along news this morning that right-hander Braden Looper will miss his next start Thursday because of tightness in an oblique muscle at the back of his ribcage, but did immediately not elaborate on the extent of the injury. Seth McClung will start that day instead as the Brewers play an exhibition against Australia's entry to the World Baseball Classic.
The quote from Macha: "It’s going to be a while on his shoulder. The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous," I have a new signature. Also, Mat Gamel, recovering from a similar injury, is leaving camp for a few days to become a father. Todd Coffey, who isn't recovering from anything at all, is also going home for a few days for the birth of his child.
Mark Rogers, Alex Periard, Jason Bourgeois and Martin Maldonado have been sent to minor league camp. Rogers, Periard and Bourgeois are all limited by injury, Maldonado is just the odd catcher out. Bourgeois is expected to be invited back once he's healthy.
From the JS Blog: In the intrasquad game tomorrow, Braden Looper, Mark DiFelice, Sam Narron and Omar Aguilar are scheduled to pitch for one side, with Chase Wright, Tim Dillard, Chris Narveson and R.J. Swindle on the other team. Macha said the Brewers probably would only play five innings or so, letting everyone get at least one at-bat. Also, Macha has lined up his starters so Jeff Suppan can be #1. Please no.
I haven't seen any word on when pitchers and catchers report, but if you know, be sure to mention it in the comments.
