Cliff Lee won last year's AL Cy Young. If there was an anti-Cy Young Award, Manny Parra might be a top contender for it. This could be interesting.
Follow the jump for tonight's pitching matchup and conversation on tonight's game!
Since posting a 6.29 ERA in 2007 and being left off the Indians' playoff roster, Cliff Lee (14-11, 2.99) has responded by pitching 443.1 innings with an ERA under 3 over the last two seasons, and he was likely the biggest acquisition made at this year's trading deadline. Since making the jump to the NL, Lee has pitched at least seven innings in seven of his ten starts (including three complete games), and has a 62:9 K:BB ratio. He went just four innings last time out, allowing a run on five hits and being pulled after 52 pitches. With the Phillies having the NL East all but locked up, it makes sense for them to play it safe with him again tonight.
Meanwhile, Manny Parra (10-10, 6.42) has the highest ERA ever by a Brewer pitcher who's won at least ten games. Wayne Franklin has the second highest at 5.50. His 1.841 WHIP is the highest ever by a Brewer who's pitched at least 100 innings. He hasn't appeared in a game since September 8 and the Phillies kicked him around in their only meeting this season, scoring five runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings. I'm having a hard time finding reasons to be optimistic for his performance tonight.
Here's the bullpen, which could be in for a long night:
Carlos Villanueva pitched two innings (25 pitches) last night.Josh Butler pitched one inning (18 pitches) last night.John Axford pitched one inning (8 pitches) last night.
Chris Smith pitched .2 innings (9 pitches) last night.
Claudio Vargas pitched one inning (5 pitches) Wednesday.Todd Coffey pitched .1 innings (11 pitches) Wednesday.
David Weathers pitched one inning (19 pitches) Wednesday.
Trevor Hoffman pitched one inning (14 pitches) Wednesday.Mike Burns has not pitched since Tuesday.
Seth McClung has not pitched since Monday.
Mitch Stetter has not pitched since Monday.
Enjoy the game!
