Winter League Update, 12/8/2010

It's been about a week and a half since I've done one of these again, so now seems like a good time.

Mexico:

Luis Cruz
Since 11/29:
10-for-28, 3 2B, 3 HR, 3 BB, 5 R, 8 RBI
Overall: .303/.342/.535 in 107 PAs.

Cruz is pretty hot right now, bouncing back from a rough start to slug .535, which would be the eighth in the league if he'd played in enough games to qualify.

Dominican Republic:

Erick Almonte
Since 11/29:
7-for-21, HR, 5 BB, 4 R, 3 RBI
Overall: .283/.392/.378 in 151 PAs over 39 games.

Almonte doesn't have much power but he does always seem to find a way to get on base. His .392 OBP is fifth in the DWL.

Carlos Gomez
Since 11/29:
None
Overall: .269/.364/.388 in 74 PAs over 19 games.

Gomez still hasn't appeared in a game since November 19, and I still don't know why.

Zack Segovia
Since 11/29: 3 appearances, 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 4 K
Overall: 14 appearances, 19.2 IP, 1.83 ERA, 6 BB, 13 K

Segovia, recently signed to a minor league deal, is spending the offseason pitching in relief for Estrellas.

Puerto Rico:

Martin Maldonado
Since 11/29: 2-for-6, BB, CS
Overall: .200/.265/.200 in 47 PAs over 18 games.

It looks like Maldonado isn't being used as more than an occasional starter with Mayaguez.

Sergio Miranda
Since 11/29: 4-for-24, 2 BB, 3 R
Overall: .339/.392/.381 in 123 PAs over 29 games.

Miranda's hot bat has cooled a bit, but he's still among the PWL's top ten in OBP, batting average and hits.

Hiram Burgos
Since 11/29:
 One appearance, 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K
Overall: Eight appearances, 17.2 IP, 3.06 ERA, 8 BB, 16 K

Burgos pitched a perfect inning yesterday in his second outing since the 18th of November.

Darren Byrd
Since 11/29:
One start, 5.1 IP, 7 R, 9 H, 2 BB, 1 K
Overall: Eight appearances (seven starts), 38.1 IP, 4.46 ERA, 12 BB, 21 K

If Byrd continues to pitch every fifth day he should be due to start again tonight.

Efrain Nieves
Since 11/29: Two starts, 8.2 IP, 6 R, 9 H, 8 BB, 4 K
Overall: Nine appearances (seven starts), 33.1 IP, 4.86 ERA, 18 BB, 21 K

Nieves really seems to be struggling with his control. He's only managed to complete five innings in one of his last five starts, and has walked four or more in three of them.

Venezuela:

Anderson de la Rosa
Since 11/29: 0-for-1

De La Rosa appears to be with Lara as an emergency catcher. That plate appearance on 12/4 was his first and only of the season.

Alcides Escobar
Since 11/29:
5-for-25, 3B, 2 BB, 2 R, 3 RBI,
Overall: .174/.206/.234 in 66 PAs over 16 games.

I guess this isn't quite as bad as last time. At least he's drawn a couple of walks.

Brendan Katin
Since 11/29: 1-for-12, HR, 2 BB, 2 R
Overall: 167/.259/.500 in 26 PAs over eight games since joining Magallanes.

Katin's all-or-nothing winter ball season continues. Six of his ten combined hits are for extra bases, and he's struck out 24 times in 47 ABs.
