Sole possession of fifth place in the Cactus League is on the line today when Yovani Gallardo and Jon Garland face off in Maryvale.

Join us after the jump for today's pitching matchup, lineup and conversation on today's game!

Yovani Gallardo (2-0, 2.57 this spring, 13-12, 3.73 last season) is coming off his best outing of the spring, throwing five shutout innings against the Royals on Saturday and hitting a solo home run in the 1-0 victory. He's struck out eight and allowed one run in his last nine innings of work. He hasn't faced the Padres during the regular season since 2007, but this is the second time he's facing them this spring: he allowed three runs on two hits in three innings on March 10.

Jon Garland (0-1, 8.22 this spring, 11-13, 4.01 last season) has been hit around a bit in his three spring training starts, allowing eight hits and five walks in 7.2 innings of work. Over the course of his career he's been pretty hittable, allowing 9.6 hits per nine innings. He faced the Brewers one time last season (as a member of the Diamondbacks), and allowed two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work, striking out five.
