Maybe Saturday's game was rock bottom. Since then, the Brewers are 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 27-8.
Yovani Gallardo was very effective in a short outing tonight, shutting out the Pirates for five innings on three hits and three walks while striking out ten. Unfortunately, he needed 103 pitches to record those 15 outs, so he was pinch hit for in the sixth inning, when Jody Gerut hit a two-run homer in his spot. All told, four Brewer pitchers (Gallardo, Carlos Villanueva, Todd Coffey, LaTroy Hawkins) held the Pirates to four hits.
At the plate, the Brewers connected for three home runs and ten hits along with five walks. Ryan Braun was on base four times, going 3-for-4 with a walk, a home run and a stolen base. Alcides Escobar went 2-for-5 with a pair of triples, and scored two runs. Every starting Brewer position player had at least one hit.
After allowing four or more runs in each of their first 12 games, the Brewers have now allowed one run in two games against the Pirates. They'll close out the series with an 11:30 game tomorrow morning.
