Draft Week: Where Are They Now? The 2008 Draft Class

With the MLB Draft coming up a week from today this week is Draft Week here at BCB, our weeklong preview. It only seemed fitting to start our week of draft coverage with a look back at the players from the 2008 and 2009 drafts for a quick scouting report on their progress.  We'll start with the 2008 class, and will have the 2009 class in the next day or two.

(All stats are before Sunday's games)

The blue chips:

2008 1st rd pick Brett Lawrie (2B)
2010 (Huntsville):
216 PA, .254/.329/.420
2009 (Wisconsin and Huntsville): 476 PA, .274/.340/.436

At 20, Lawrie is one of the youngest players in AA, so his performance at that level is very encouraging. There are still questions about his ability to stick at second base, and likely will be until he's either moved or starts making big league appearances. All told, though, he's clearly the #1 prospect acquired by the Brewers in the last two drafts.

2008 1st rd (supplemental) pick Jake Odorizzi (RHP)
2010 (Wisconsin):
40.2 IP, 3.54 ERA, 52 K, 16 BB
2009 (Helena): 47 IP, 4.40 ERA, 43 K, 9 BB
2008 (Helena): 20.2 IP, 3.48 ERA, 19 K, 9 BB

Odorizzi only turned 20 in March, and he's drawing rave reviews in his first season in the Midwest League. The Brewers have taken it slow with him, though, so it'll be interesting to see how they handle him going forward: He only threw 47 innings all of last season, and is already over 40 for 2010.

2008 3rd rd pick Logan Schafer (OF)
2010:
Has not played
2009 (Brevard County and Huntsville): 535 PA, .308/.370/.440
2008 (Helena and West Virginia): 227 PA, .272/.313/.393

Schafer was invited to spring training by the Brewers this spring, but didn't appear after injuring his groin in minor league camp, and has yet to play in a game this season. He's 23 and has already appeared in AA.

Follow the jump for the rest!

Others of note:

2008 5th rd pick Maverick Lasker (RHP)
2010 (Wisconsin):
34.2 IP, 4.67 ERA, 27 K, 16 BB
2009 (Helena and Wisconsin): 56 IP, 3.54 ERA, 43 K, 14 BB

Even if he doesn't work out as a starter, Maverick Lasker is a pretty cool name.

2008 7th rd pick Trey Watten (RHP)
2010 (Brevard County):
40 IP, 4.05 ERA, 30 K, 19 BB
2009 (Wisconsin): 133.2 IP, 4.71 ERA, 96 K, 58 BB
2008 (Helena): 55 IP, 5.40 ERA, 40 K, 25 BB

2008 8th rd pick Erik Komatsu (OF)
2010 (Brevard County):
216 PA, .313/.371/.411
2009 (Arizona and Wisconsin): 79 PA, .253/.344/.316
2008 (Helena): 316 PA, .321/.394/.538

Komatsu had a tough and injury-riddled 2009 season, but has bounced back to become a 2010 FSL All Star.

2008 9th rd pick Michael Bowman (RHP)
2010 (Huntsville):
45.1 IP, 4.96 ERA, 36 K, 15 BB
2009 (Wisconsin and Brevard County): 131.2 IP, 2.60 ERA, 101 K, 53 BB
2008 (Helena and West Virginia): 46.2 IP, 3.86 ERA, 38 K, 21 BB

Bowman is 23 and has climbed through the system quickly. He's getting hit a little harder in 2010, but his K rate is holding steady (7.1 per 9), and his walks are down (3 per 9).

2008 18th rd pick Nick Bucci (RHP)
2010 (Wisconsin):
45.1 IP, 1.59 ERA, 33 K, 27 BB
2009 (Helena and Huntsville): 73.1 IP, 4.54 ERA, 69 K, 23 BB
2008 (Arizona): 11 IP, 7.36 ERA, 14 K, 2 BB

Another 17 year old draftee, Bucci parlayed a nice season in 2009 into a great showing in the Baseball World Cup, and is working through some control issues to be very effective in the Midwest League, all before his 20th birthday.

Still in the organization:

2008 1st rd (supplemental) pick Evan Frederickson (LHP)
2010 (Brevard County):
15.1 IP, 8.22 ERA, 15 K, 28 BB
2009 (Wisconsin): 97.1 IP, 5.27 ERA, 93 K, 82 BB
2008 (Helena and West Virginia): 32 IP, 5.06 ERA, 34 K, 31 BB

In his age 23 season, Frederickson has been promoted each of the last two seasons but his control remains a major concern: He's walked 141 opposing batters in 144.2 pro innings.

2008 2nd rd pick Seth Lintz (RHP)
2010:
Has not played
2009 (Arizona): 40.1 IP, 4.91 ERA, 41 K, 38 BB
2008 (Arizona): 18.1 IP, 6.87 ERA, 26 K, 16 BB

Lintz just turned 20 in February, but the fact that he's entering his third professional season and still has yet to appear above the bottom rung of the minor league ladder is troubling.

2008 2nd rd pick Cutter Dykstra (2B/3B)
2010 (Wisconsin):
89 PA, .276/.368/.342
2009 (Helena and Wisconsin): 352 PA, .234/.325/.334
2008 (Arizona and Helena): 198 PA, .271/.374/.412

Dykstra opened the 2009 season as a center fielder for Wisconsin, but was sent down after a rough start and spent the rest of the season in Helena learning to play second. Now he's back in Wisconsin and playing primarily at third. He's still young (will turn 21 in June), but his early results have been disappointing.

2008 2nd rd pick Cody Adams (RHP)
2010:
Has not played.
2009 (Wisconsin): 57.2 IP, 5.93 ERA, 37 K, 33 BB
2008 (Helena): 54.1 IP, 3.48 ERA, 37 K, 16 BB

Adams was suspended for 50 games in 2009 after testing positive for amphetamines. He's already in his age 23 season, and might be on his way out before long.

2008 11th rd pick Michael Marseco (SS)
2010 (Wisconsin):
146 PA, .215/.281/.298
2009 (Helena and Wisconsin): 499 PA, .204/.251/.264
2008 (Helena): 160 PA, .311/.338/.437

Mini-Mike (listed at 5'9", 145) is a favorite of many, but his weak bat makes him little more than organizational filler.

2008 13th rd pick Rob Wooten (RHP)
2010: Has not played
2009 (Brevard County and Huntsville):
27.1 IP, 2.67 ERA, 78 K, 22 BB
2008 (Helena and West Virginia): 31.2 IP, 1.71 ERA, 44 K, 6 BB

Wooten hasn't pitched in a game since appearing in the Arizona Fall League in 2009, and I'm not sure why.

2008 15th rd pick Mark Willinsky (RHP)
2010 (Huntsville):
22.1 IP, 6.04 ERA, 22 K, 11 BB
2009 (Brevard County): 60.1 IP, 3.73 ERA, 45 K, 34 BB
2008 (Helena): 33.1 IP, 4.86 ERA, 35 K, 24 BB

2008 16th rd pick Stosh Wawrzasek (RHP)
2010:
Has not played
2009 (Arizona): 21.2 IP, 3.74 ERA, 23 K, 9 BB
2008 (Arizona): 11.2 IP, 6.94 ERA, 12 K, 7 BB

Drafted as a 17 year old, Stosh won't turn 20 until August, so the Brewers are understandably taking it slow with him. With that said, this might be the year for him to debut with Helena.

2008 17th rd pick Damon Krestalude (RHP)
2010 (Wisconsin):
43 IP, 4.81 ERA, 27 K, 14 BB
2009 (Helena and Brevard County): 75.2 IP, 5.00 ERA, 54 K, 33 BB
2008 (Arizona): 34.1 IP, 3.15 ERA, 28 K, 16 BB

2009 19th rd pick Blakeney Billings (RHP)
2010:
Has not played
2009 (Arizona): 46.2 IP, 7.14 ERA, 42 K, 30 BB
2008 (Arizona): 12 IP, 2.25 ERA, 15 K, 1 BB

2008 21st rd pick Lucas Luetge (LHP)
2010 (Brevard County):
31.2 IP, 2.56 ERA, 17 K, 9 BB
2009 (Brevard County): 92.1 IP, 4.48 ERA, 75 K, 38 BB
2009 (Helena and West Virginia): 50.1 IP, 2.68 ERA, 46 K, 15 BB

2008 24th rd pick Brandon Ritchie (LHP)
2010 (Brevard County):
27.2 IP, 8.13 ERA, 11 K, 19 BB
2009 (Wisconsin): 70.1 IP, 1.54 ERA, 58 K, 28 BB
2008 (Helena): 55 IP, 6.87 ERA, 49 K, 21 BB

2008 30th rd pick Wayne Dedrick (3B)
2010:
Has not played
2009 (Arizona): 198 PA, .227/.298/.324

2008 38th rd pick Michael Roberts (C)
2010 (Brevard County):
61 PA, .232/.283/.286
2009 (Helena and Brevard County): 197 PA, .187/.282/.333
2008 (Helena): 160 PA, .270/.342/.397

2008 46th rd pick Carlos George (SS)
2010 (Wisconsin):
67 PA, .217/.250/.317
2009 (Arizona and Helena): 216 PA, .289/.332/.371
2008 (Arizona): 181 PA, .234/.258/.316

2008 49th rd pick Daniel Meadows (LHP)
2010 (Brevard County):
34 IP, 2.91 ERA, 31 K, 8 BB
2009 (Wisconsin): 116.2 IP, 4.01 ERA, 108 K, 32 BB
2008 (Arizona and Helena): 47.2 IP, 4.53 ERA, 42 K, 18 BB
