When Madison Bumgarner flew out on the first offering to end the seventh, it was Yovani Gallardo's 121st pitch of the day. That's the second most he's thrown in a game this season and tied for the fourth most in his major league career. It's also the first time he's ever thrown that many in a Brewer loss:
Date | Opponent | Pitches | IP | H | ER | BB | K | Result |
5/25/2009 | Cardinals | 126 | 8 | 2 | 0 | 4 | 6 | W, 1-0 |
7/6/2011 | Diamondbacks | 123 | 7 | 4 | 1 | 1 | 6 | W, 3-1 |
6/24/2010 | Twins | 122 | 9 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 12 | W, 5-0 |
Today | Giants | 121 | 7 | 6 | 2 | 1 | 5 | L, 2-1 |
5/28/2010 | Mets | 121 | 9 | 8 | 0 | 1 | 7 | W, 2-0 |
5/1/2010 | Padres | 121 | 7 | 6 | 1 | 2 | 11 | W, 2-1 |
As you might have noticed above, this is only the second time in Gallardo's career he's ever thrown 120 pitches twice in a month. In 2010 he did it three times in two months, then ended up on the DL in July.
Gallardo will, fortunately, get an extra day of rest between now and his next start on Saturday.
