John Axford's 23rd save of the season tonight wasn't pretty, but it was successful. And by recording the final out, he put himself in pretty rare air.
Tonight's save was Axford's 20th consecutive conversion of a save opportunity. He's only the fourth pitcher in Brewer history to reach that mark:
Pitcher | Begin | End | Saves |
Doug Jones | 5/31/1997 | 9/26/1997 | 25 |
Francisco Cordero | 4/3/2007 | 6/5/2007 | 22 |
Mike Fetters | 7/26/1994 | 8/2/1995 | 20 |
John Axford | 4/24/2011 | Present | 20 |
Tonight's save also moved Axford into sole possession of eleventh place on the Brewer all time list with 48 career saves. With 18 more this season he could move all the way into fifth:
Pitcher | Saves |
Dan Plesac | 133 |
Rollie Fingers | 97 |
Bob Wickman | 79 |
Mike Fetters | 79 |
Derrick Turnbow | 65 |
Dan Kolb | 61 |
Doug Henry | 61 |
Ken Sanders | 61 |
Francisco Cordero | 60 |
Doug Jones | 49 |
John Axford | 48 |
Axford's next save will be his 24th of 2011, tying his career high set last year.
