I was in attendance at Nashville's game at Iowa tonight. Amaury Rivas was not locating his pitches very well. Admittedly the umpire was not calling the low strike for any pitchers--starters, relievers, Sounds or Cubs--tonight. Mike McClendon was much better at getting his pitches in the strike zone but they were all of the hittable variety leading to an offensive explosion for the I-Cubs. There were other sorts of explosions. Rivas didn't appear to be listening to what Martin Maldonado had to say to him. He walked away from his catcher a few times, to the point that Mat Gamel came out to the mound to talk his pitcher through a tough spot. Gamel is showing some leadership ability on the field. His throwing ability from 3rd base is essentially unchanged. It's not that he's not trying.... I was also very impressed with Caleb Gindl's hitting. As for his error in the 5th, that was a team effort compounded by Rivas not being where he was supposed to be, namely backing up home plate.
