Fun Facts: Division Series Day 5

Spellcheck says "quadrupleheader" isn't a word, but I think it's an awesome word. Here are today's games.

Today's action starts at noon with an NLDS Game 3, as the Cardinals travel to Washington (series tied 1-1) for the first playoff game in the nation's capital since 1933. The Nationals will send veteran journeyman Edwin Jackson (4.03 ERA, 3.85 FIP) to the mound against Chris Carpenter (3.71 ERA, 4.09 FIP).

Fun Fact: Edwin Jackson is pitching in the postseason for his third different team, having started playoff games for the 2008 Rays and 2011 Cardinals. Roger Clemens, Curt Schilling, David Cone, Don Sutton, Kevin Brown and CC Sabathia are some of the others who have done that. Randy Johnson pitched in the playoffs for four franchises, and David Wells did it for five.

At 3 we'll see our first potential elimination game of the day, as the Reds (leading the series 2-1) get their second opportunity to beat the Giants and advance to the NLCS. As of this writing they haven't made it official but they're expected to send Mike Leake (4.58 ERA, 4.42 FIP) to the mound to face Barry Zito (4.15 ERA, 4.49 FIP).

Fun fact: The Giants have a payroll over $130 million this season and Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Pablo Sandoval and likely NL MVP Buster Posey under contract, but Barry Zito is their highest paid player. Since the start of the 2011 season he's striking out just 5.5 batters per nine innings.

The action continues at 6:30 when the Orioles head to New York for Game 3 of their ALDS matchup against the Yankees (series tied 1-1). The Yankees will send Japanese righthander Hiroki Kuroda (3.32 ERA, 3.86 FIP) to the mound to face rookie righthander Miguel Gonzalez (3.25 ERA, 4.38 FIP).

Fun fact: The Yankees starting pitchers this postseason have been CC Sabathia (32) and Andy Pettitte (40), and now Kuroda (37). They're all older than the oldest pitcher to start for the Orioles, Joe Saunders (31). In fact, Kuroda and Pettitte are the two oldest pitchers to start a game this postseason.

Finally, the day wraps up in Oakland where the Athletics will look to fight off elimination at home for the second consecutive day against the Tigers (leading series 2-1). Oakland will send 24-year-old rookie righthander A.J. Griffin (3.06 ERA, 3.85 FIP) to the mound to face Max Scherzer (3.74 ERA, 3.27 FIP).

Fun fact: Griffin, Jarrod Parker, Brett Anderson and Tommy Milone are the four starters the A's have used this postseason, and they're four of the five youngest pitchers to start a game this October. Only Madison Bumgarner of the Giants (23) is younger.

Today's first game will be on MLB Network, with the following three all broadcast on TBS.
