Wednesday's Frosty Mug: 90 Days Until First Pitchers & Catchers Report

We officially have a countdown to Spring Training now: 90 days to go. Also, Norichika Aoki turns down a chance to play in the WBC and the votes for Manager of the Year are revealed.

Some things to consider while requesting a trade.

The countdown to Spring Training is on as the Brewers released their Spring Training schedule yesterday. The key day here is February 12, as that is when some of the pitchers and catchers will report. In a change from previous years, only pitchers and catchers with zero to three years of MLB experience will report on that day. Everyone else will report on February 15.

Here are some of the highlights of the schedule:

  • The Brewers will play 35 games in Spring Training, including 17 at Maryvale Baseball Park and 2 at Miller Park.
  • The first spring training game will be on February 23, and the last one in Arizona will be on March 28. The two games at Miller Park will follow on March 29 and 30.
  • John Axford and Jim Henderson are looking forward to a game on March 5th against Team Canada.
  • The extended schedule is due to the World Baseball classic, which takes place March 2-19.

The BBWAA released their voting for Manager of the Year yesterday. Bob Melvin took the award for the AL, receiving 16 of 28 first-place votes, while Buck Showalter took the other 12. Meanwhile, on the NL side, Davey Johnson ran away with the vote by receiving 23 of the 32 first-place votes. As expected, Ron Roenicke was not listed on any ballots. The BBWAA has been more open with their voting this season, but Bryan O'Connor of High Heat Stats wonders if this could create controversy with some of the closer votes.

While MLB is releasing their awards, the Brewers marketing department got an award themselves. They received an award from PromaxBDA for the TV campaign their put together in 2012.

Nyjer Morgan provided some laughs for the Brewers, but his rough 2012 season drew a lot of criticism. He was the first Brewer to be profiled in the next portion of our MVBrewers series in a new section called Lesser Brewers. The second part of the Lesser Brewers series will run today at 2 pm.

The second round of qualifiers for the World Baseball Classic begins today. Japan has already secured a place in the WBC, but learned today that Norichika Aoki will not play for Japan, opting to prepare for the Brewers season instead. Norichika Aoki was also the subject of a letter from Colin Bennett of Reviewing the Brew.

If you went to Miller Park at all during the 2012 season, you probably saw at least one promotion for the Brewers Community Foundation. Thanks to all of their promotions during the 2012 season, they raised $3.5 million for organizations around Milwaukee.

Cubs: Signed Scott Baker to a one year, $5.5 million contract.
Orioles: Signed Daniel McCutchen and Dan Meyer to minor-league contracts.
Phillies: Signed Kevin Frandsen to a one-year contract.

Of course, the big news around baseball yesterday was the trade between the Miami Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays. A total of eleven players are involved in the trade. Here are some of the details that we have:
