In Surprise(!), where the Brewers lost 9-4 to the Royals:

W: Luis Mendoza (2-0)
L: Yovani Gallardo (1-1)

HR: Corey Patterson (1)

And in Tucson, where they lost 6-1 to the Mariners:

W: Felix Hernandez (2-1)
L: Marco Estrada (1-1)

HR: Alex Liddi (1)

Coming into today's action Brewer starting pitchers had been remarkably good this spring. So I guess you could say they were due for this to happen eventually.

Both of today's Brewer starting pitchers (Yovani Gallardo and Marco Estrada) pitched scoreless first innings today, but the two combined to allow seven runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batsman in their respective second innings. Gallardo left after allowing four runs on five hits in three innings, while Estrada allowed three runs on five hits in his three frames.

Meanwhile, the Brewer offenses didn't get their first hits until the fourth inning in Tucson and the fifth in Surprise(!), as they were shut down by Felix Hernandez of the Mariners and Luis Mendoza of the Royals. Mendoza struck out seven in his 4.2 innings of work, but did allow a run on a Jonathan Lucroy single in the fifth. The Brewers' lone run against the Mariners scored on a Martin Maldonado RBI groundout in the seventh.

To the bullet points!

  • Lucroy's RBI single gave him hits in all eight of his games this spring.
  • Norichika Aoki also had a single in the sixth inning of the Royals game, ending an 0-for-10 slump.
  • Corey Patterson and Travis Ishikawa drove in the Brewers' final runs against the Royals with a ninth inning solo homer and RBI single off Jeremy Jeffress, respectively.

The losses today dropped the Brewers to 6-8-1 this spring. They're back in action tomorrow when they face the Angels in Tempe.
