Today In Brewer History: A Handful Of Goodbyes

As the final weeks of spring training wind down, the Brewers are often left with tough decisions on who to keep on the major league roster. As a result, several notable Brewers have moved on on March 25 in recent memory.

One year ago today, the Brewers traded outfielder Chris Dickerson to the Yankees for pitcher Sergio Mitre. Dickerson, acquired from the Reds in a trade involving Jim Edmonds the previous August, went on to play in 60 games for New York and bat .260/.296/.360 with one home run. Mitre made 22 appearances as a Brewer before being returned to the Yankees for cash.

Three years ago today the Brewers released outfielder Trot Nixon, ending his major league career. Nixon hadn't played a full major league season since 2006, and had gone just 4-for-38 in 20 spring training games.

Finally, four years ago today the Brewers released pitcher Claudio Vargas. Vargas had come to Milwaukee as part of the trade that sent Doug Davis to Arizona, and had somehow won eleven games in 2007 despite posting a 5.09 ERA. Vargas would eventually return to Milwaukee in 2009 and 2010 after stints with the Mets and Dodgers.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2004 Brewer Adrian Hernandez. He turns 37. Today is also Gorman the dachshund's fourth birthday. He's likely better known as the Rally Lobster.
