Win Expectancy Graph and Star of the Game Voting
This one was more or less over before the Brewer defense ever took the field. The Crew sent ten batters to the plate in the first inning and scored five runs on two hits, two walks and two men hit by pitches. The big blow in the inning was a three run homer for Alex Gonzalez, his first as a Brewer.
Carlos Gomez and Jonathan Lucroy also had multiple hits tonight, and one of Lucroy's was his first homer of the season. Every Brewer starting position player reached base safely at least once tonight. Three different Brewers were hit by pitches.
I'm not sure what to make of Chris Narveson's outing tonight. On paper it wasn't bad (five innings, two earned runs on six hits, two walks and four strikeouts), but he was staked to a 5-0 lead before taking the mound in the first inning and still only completed five frames. As such, the bullpen had to fill four innings again tonight.
For the second straight night the Brewers entered the ninth with a four run lead but ended up having to call in a closer to nail down the save. John Axford was unavailable after throwing 53 pitches over the previous two days, so Francisco Rodriguez recorded his first Brewer save.
There are two games left in Chicago, but the Brewers could clinch the series victory with a win tomorrow at 1:20. Yovani Gallardo will face Ryan Dempster in the matinee.
