The Brewers' big first inning was the story tonight, as they sent ten men to the plate in their first opportunity and scored five runs. It was the first time all season the Brewers have scored five runs in an inning, and it's relatively unusual for them to score that much their first time at bat.
In both 2010 and 2011 the Brewers scored five or more runs in the first inning exactly one time. The 2011 game featured a five run first. The 2010 game, however, featured one of the greatest offensive innings in Brewer history.
Facing Jason Marquis and the Nationals, the Brewers scored ten runs in the first on April 18, 2010. The first eight Brewers to come to the plate in the inning reached base safely, and Craig Counsell (the eleventh batter of the inning) hit a grand slam to cap the scoring. The Brewers only plated one more run in the game but it didn't matter: They won 11-7.
The 2009 Brewers, meanwhile, scored five or more runs in the first inning on four occasions.
