Stat Of The Night: It Was Only Eight, But It Felt Like Infinity

The Brewers came off the rails in the third inning tonight, allowing eight runs and failing to record an out until Jake Westbrook bunted as the eighth batter in the inning.

Before tonight, the Brewers hadn't allowed more than six runs in a single inning this season. It had been almost a year since they'd allowed eight: The Padres torched the Brewer bullpen for eight in the eighth inning on May 11 of last year.

Tonight's game was the first time the Brewers have allowed eight runs in the third inning of a game since 2001. Jeff D'Amico was the Brewer starting pitcher in that game and allowed all eight runs, but only one of them was earned after a two-out error by Geoff Jenkins in left field.

The Brewers had to feel like something bad was coming that inning, as it started with a triple from John Thomson, the opposing pitcher. The Rockies had three singles, two doubles, two triples and two home runs in the inning.

Tonight the Cardinals' inning was a little more mundane: They had six singles, three walks and a double in the frame.
