Brewer Minor Leaguers Fall Just Short In Comeback Attempt, Lose 5-3 To Cubs

W: Travis Wood (2-2)
L: Kyle Heckathorn (0-1)
S:Shawn Camp (1)

HR: Andy Gonzalez (1), Starlin Castro (2), Alfredo Amezaga (1)

And that's a wrap for Cactus League play.

With most of the major league Brewers at Chase Field for a game against the Diamondbacks tonight, a lineup comprised mostly of the AA Huntsville Stars kept it close but couldn't beat the Cubs today. Kyle Heckathorn, pitching in his first major league game of the spring, allowed all five Cub runs on eight hits over five innings and picked up the loss.

Nyjer Morgan, Jonathan Lucroy and Mat Gamel made the trip to Mesa today but the Brewer offensive star was once again young second baseman Scooter Gennett, who had three hits and drove in a run with a double. Gennett is likely done playing exhibition games for the Brewers but picked up nine hits in 20 at bats this spring and has to have improved his stock going forward.

That's not a typo on the home run list above: Andy, not Alex, Gonzalez hit the Brewers' lone home run in the game.

For whatever it's worth, Evan Anundsen pitched today in relief of Heckathorn and retired nine batters in order.

The Brewers close out their last split-squad day of the spring with a game at Chase Field against the Diamondbacks at 8:40. We'll have the game thread up for that shortly.
