There are some unlikely names on that list, but Batista might be the strangest.
The Brewers turned a 41-year-old veteran journeyman into an ace tonight, managing just four hits and a walk over seven innings, his second-longest outing since 2008. The Brewers had runners in scoring position against him in the first, second, fifth and sixth but failed to push a run across.
Meanwhile, Yovani Gallardo managed to work through a difficult night. He allowed just two hits but tied a career-high with six walks over six innings. He also struck out six in the game and threw 109 pitches. He'll pick up a tough-luck loss but gave the Brewers six consecutive games with a quality start. They're just 3-3 in those games.
I guess this is something we all should have seen coming eventually: The Brewers botched a squeeze attempt tonight and squandered a situation with a runner on third and no one out in the second. Then the Mets added insult to injury by squeezing home a run of their own in the sixth.
Aramis Ramirez doubled tonight to extend his hitting streak to eleven games. His error in an eighth inning rundown also allowed the Mets' third run to score.
The Brewers mounted a rally in the ninth, scored a run to avoid the shutout and had the tying run on first base with one out, but Brooks Conrad (who is now 0-for-15 as a Brewer) struck out and George Kottaras flied out to end the game.
The Brewers are 1-11 in the final game of series this season, but they'll need to win tomorrow to avoid getting swept. Zack Greinke will take the mound against Dillon Gee at 6:10.
