Today In Brewer History: Happy Birthday, Carlos Lee

"So Carlos, just how big is the stack of cash you got from the Astros?"

On this day in 1976 Carlos Lee was born in Aguadulce, Panama. He was 18 years old when the White Sox signed him as an amateur free agent in 1994, and had not yet celebrated his 23rd birthday when he made his major league debut with Chicago in 1999.

Lee had played six seasons and was a .287/.339/.481 career hitter when the White Sox traded him to the Brewers following the 2004 season in a deal that sent outfielder Scott Podsednik and reliever Luis Vizcaino to the White Sox. Lee's only full season as a Brewer came in 2005 but it was a good one, as he played in all 162 Brewer games, hit a then-career high 32 home runs and made his first All Star appearance.

Lee represented the Brewers in the midsummer classic again in 2006, and a few weeks later the organization sent him to the Rangers in exchange for four players, most notably closer Francisco Cordero and outfielder Kevin Mench. The most notable player in the deal actually turned out to be minor league outfielder Nelson Cruz, who had stalled in the minors with the Brewers and would go on to be designated for assignment with the Rangers, but has since become a .275/.333/.518 hitter over the last four seasons.

Lee turns 36 today. With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

  • 2002 Brewer Paul Bako, who turns 40.
  • Marshfield native and UW-Oshkosh alum Gary Varsho, who turns 51. Varsho played eight major league seasons between 1988-95 as a member of the Pirates and three other teams.
  • 1993 Brewer Dickie Thon, who turns 54.
  • 1972-73 Brewer Ray Newman, who turns 67.
  • FS Wisconsin broadcaster Davey Nelson, who turns 68.
  • 1978 Brewer Andy Etchebarren, who turns 69.

Today is also the 30th anniversary of Ben Oglivie's three home run game in 1982. We covered that event in this space last year.
