Today In Brewer History: Eric Young Gets On Base

On this day in 2000 the Brewers and Cubs played a wild Friday night contest at County Stadium. The Brewers carried a 4-1 lead into the eighth inning but could not hold it, as the Cubs rallied for one in the eighth and two in the ninth to force extra innings. Six scoreless innings later the Cubs tacked on three more runs in the 15th to pick up a 7-4 victory. The game took over five and a half hours to play and 15 pitchers combined to throw 513 pitches.

Eric Young was the leadoff hitter for the Cubs that night and came to the plate eight times. Here's how he did:

  • He walked in the first.
  • He walked in the third.
  • He was hit by a pitch in the sixth.
  • He singled in the eighth.
  • He walked (with the bases loaded) in the ninth.
  • He flew out in the eleventh.
  • He was walked intentionally in the 13th.
  • He walked (with the bases loaded again) in the 15th.

If you lost count, let me recap that for you: In eight plate appearances Young was on base seven times with a hit, a HBP and five walks. He's one of two opposing players in Brewer history to walk five times in a game, and one of just five to reach base seven times:

Player Date Times on base Line
Rod Carew May 12, 1972 8 5-for-7. 3 BB
Eric Young June 30, 2000 7 1-for-2, 5 BB, HBP
Tim Raines April 20, 1994 7 3-for-3, 4 BB
Tom Paciorek May 8, 1984 7 5-for-9, BB
Steve Brye May 12, 1972 7 3-for-6, 3 BB, ROE

Young's OBP went up eleven points that day, from .386 to .397.

With help from and the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

  • AZL brewer Danny Keller, who turns 20.
  • Milwaukee native Mark Grudzielanek, who turns 42. He played 15 major league seasons between 1995-2010 as a member of the Dodgers and five other teams.
  • 2001 Brewer Tony Fernandez, who turns 50.
  • Cambria, Wisconsin native and 1901 Milwaukee Brewer Davy Jones, who would have turned 132.

Today is also the 37th anniversary of a 1975 game where the Brewers came from behind to beat the Yankees and close within two games of first place. We covered that event in this space last year.
