On this day in 1965 Gregory Lamont Vaughn was born in Sacramento, California. After going to college at the University of Miami he was selected fourth in the secondary phase of the 1986 draft by the Brewers. He signed nearly immediately and by 1989 he was in the big leagues.
All told Vaughn played parts of eight seasons as a Brewer, hitting .246/.333/.459 and making two All Star appearances (1993 and 1996). He was on his way to his best Brewer season in '96 and had already hit a career-high 31 home runs when the Crew dealt him to San Diego in a five player trade. Vaughn went on to play eight more major league seasons.
Vaughn hit 169 home runs in his eight seasons as a Brewer, the eighth most in franchise history. He's also tenth with 566 RBI and eighth with 421 walks.
Vaughn turns 47 today. With help from the B-Ref Play Index we'd also like to wish a happy birthday to:
- 1988-91 Brewer Don August, who turns 49.
- 1971 and '74-75 Brewer Rob Ellis, who turns 62.
Today is also the 30th anniversary of the Brewers setting a franchise record by drawing 55,716 fans to County Stadium in 1982. We covered that event in this space last year.
