Win Expectancy Graph, Star of the Game Voting, and Box Score

With the way Mike Fiers was coming into the league, it seemed like he was due for a bad game. However, no one saw a game this bad coming.

It was just a rough day overall for Mike Fiers. He allowed three runs in the first, one in the second, and four in the third (last two coming after Mike McClendon came in to the game) to give the Rockies an 8-0 lead after three innings. In the game, he allowed nine hits but walked none. He only threw 48 pitches, but 32 of those were for strikes. His ERA spiked as a result (from 1.80 to 2.63), but his FIP will decrease after he allowed no walks and no home runs (the two factors that would increase FIP). On a side note, he may have bought himself one more start thanks to the short start today.

The offense wasn't much better for most of the game. The Brewers were scoreless through the first three innings, and finally got on the board in the fourth thanks to an RBI groundout from Corey Hart. Carlos Gomez hit a two-run home run to make it 8-3, and Rickie Weeks added a three-run shot in the ninth to make it 9-6. Gomez was the offensive hero, going 3-4 on the day with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The bullpen did their job today, allowing only one run over six innings. Mike McClendon pitched two scoreless innings, though he did allow the runners he inherited from Fiers to score. Livan Hernandez covered three innings and allowed a total of one run, and Francisco Rodriguez also pitched in with a perfect inning.

The Brewers will try to forget about this one in game two of the series tomorrow night. It will be Randy Wolf vs. Tyler Chatwood. First pitch is at 7:40 PM.
