Today In Brewer History: Casey Crushes Cardinals

Casey McGehee had a season to forget in 2011, but on this day one year ago he had a game to remember against the Cardinals.

His big day started in the first inning when he hit a two-run home run to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead. He came up again in the third and went deep again, driving in Prince Fielder to give the Crew the lead again at 5-4. After flying out in the fifth he came up again in the seventh and homered for the third time, expanding the lead to 10-5.

McGehee's three homer game was the Brewers second (of three) in 2011, and at the time it was only the 16th time a Brewer had ever done it. Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun have each done it since.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2005-06 Brewer Justin Lehr. He turns 35.

Today is also the anniversary of Rollie Fingers' season-ending back surgery in 1984, cutting short a year where the future Hall of Famer posted a 1.96 ERA and saved 23 games. We covered that event in this space last year.
