Today In Brewer History: Craig Counsell Snaps Out Of It

On this day one year ago the Brewers beat the Astros 8-1 in Houston, their ninth win in ten games. Ryan Braun had three hits and a walk in the game, and was one of nine Brewers to get a hit.

The most surprising of those nine Brewers was Craig Counsell, who singled in a pinch hitter in the ninth inning. The hit snapped an 0-for-45 streak that had gone on for nearly two full months. Counsell had gone 3-for-3 on June 10 but had gotten on base just two times in 50 plate appearances since.

Counsell's hitless streak was easily the longest streak for a position player in Brewer franchise history, and narrowly avoided matching Doug Davis' 49 consecutive hitless ABs in 2003-04, the longest streak by a pitcher.

With help from Brewerfan.net and the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:

  • AZL Brewer Dane Amedee, who turns 22.
  • Menasha, Wisconsin native Eric Hinske, who turns 35. He's played eleven major league seasons since 2002 as a member of the Blue Jays, Braves and four other teams.
  • 1976 Brewer Bernie Carbo, who turns 65.
  • Troy, Wisconsin native and Beloit College alumni Doc Adkins, who would have turned 140. He was a member of the 1902 Boston Americans (Red Sox) and 1903 New York Highlanders (Yankees).
Today is also the anniversary of Jeromy Burnitz's fifth home run in consecutive days in 1997 as the Brewers lost 6-5 to the Angels. We covered that event in this space last year.
