Monday's Frosty Mug: Brewer News, Links And Notes From The Weekend

Some things to read while taking it one day at a time.

The Brewers came back late yesterday to tie the game on a Norichika Aoki home run in the ninth but couldn't ride the momentum to a three game sweep in St. Louis, losing 5-4 in ten innings. Noah has the recap, if you missed it.

While the loss was bad enough, yesterday's big story was two Brewers who had to leave the game early. First Corey Hart left the game with a sprained ankle and what he described as a "burning" sensation in his foot, then Ryan Braun departed early with a lingering wrist issue. Both players will likely be reevaluated at home today.

The Brewers rallied back yesterday to overcome yet another rough start for Shaun Marcum, who allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings in a performance Adam McCalvy compared to Jeff Suppan in the 2008 NLDS. Marcum has pitched in the sixth inning just one time and allowed three or more runs in each of his four starts since coming off the DL.

Taylor Green appeared in all three Brewer games this weekend to cap off a very long week: He joined the Brewers in St. Louis after driving his car back from Nashville to British Columbia. Green's fall travel adventures will continue once the season is over as his agent reports he's expected to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic, where he will spend at least some time in the outfield.

Other notes from the field:

• Jean Segura was on base four times for the first time as a major leaguer yesterday, collecting three hits and a walk.
• Aramis Ramirez was hit by a pitch yesterday for the 100th time as a major leaguer, joining Rickie Weeks to become the fourth pair of 100 HBP teammates in major league history. Plunk Everyone has more on the accomplishment.
• The Cardinals apparently celebrate #HighSocksSunday.
• John Axford was likely unavailable yesterday after pitching six times in the first eight days in September. With that said, he's converted nine consecutive saves.
• Friday night's game lasted four hours and 30 minutes and was played following a two hour, 20 minute rain delay.
• Ryan Braun rounded the bases in 22.67 seconds and was Larry Granillo of Baseball Prospectus' Home Run of the Day on Friday.
• Manny Parra left Friday night's game after taking a ball off his face but is expected to be ok.

The Brewers return home tonight where they've won 14 of their last 16 games to take on the Braves for the final time this season. Mike Minor will take on Wily Peralta at 7:10, and Andrew Simon has the MLB.com preview. Noted leisured gentleman Carson Cistulli of Fangraphs gave tonight's game a five out of ten on his NERD scale.

The Brewers made a minor transaction over the weekend, claiming pitcher Miguel De Los Santos off waivers from the Rangers. MDLS is 24 and posted a 5.22 ERA while striking out 10.7 batters per nine innings for AA Frisco in the Texas League this season. He's not related to Fautino De Los Santos, the pitcher the Brewers acquired in the George Kottaras trade.

Norichika Aoki went 0-for Friday and Saturday, snapping a ten game hitting streak. He's still our reigning Brewer of the Week for the second time this season.

Mark Rogers has been shut down and his season is likely over...unless it isn't. He still threw a bullpen session on Friday and is holding out hope that he'll get back into a game at some point in September.

In the minors:

• If you weren't around last night you may not have heard that the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat Clinton 4-2 to finish a sweep of the Midwest League Western Division Finals and will open a five game championship series at home on Wednesday. • John Sickels of Minor League Ball has a recap of the 13th round of the 2012 draft, and says Florida high school first baseman Alan Sharkey is "not much to be wild about yet but just 18."

Around baseball:

Blue Jays: Pitcher J.A. Happ is out for the season with a broken foot.
Cubs: Claimed pitcher Jason Berken off waivers from the Orioles.
Giants: Designated pitcher Steve Edlefsen for assignment and announced that pitcher Eric Hacker has refused an outright assignment to the minors and is now a free agent.
Phillies: Placed infielder Placido Polanco on the DL with lower back inflammation.

Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija has been shut down for the remainder of the 2012 season, but went out with a bang by completing his final start over the weekend. The Brewers and Rockies are now the last teams left without a complete game this season.

Samardzija's complete game was part of the Cubs' three game sweep of the Pirates this weekend. The Pirates opened the set by committing seven errors in a loss Friday night.

As the season winds down, it's safe to assume any 2012 Rule 5 draft pick still on his new team will likely stay there for the long haul. New Mariner and former Brewer prospect Lucas Luetge is one of five players that will become property of his drafting team following the season.

Elsewhere in former Brewers: Disciples of Uecker has video of Ned Yost botching a pitching change for the Royals on Friday.

This morning's edition of Today In Brewer History marks the fourth anniversary of Prince Fielder's 24th consecutive homerless game in 2008, the longest streak of his career. Yesterday was also the 20th anniversary of Robin Yount's 3000th hit.
