Today In Brewer History: Axford All Alone

On this day one year ago the Brewers beat the Marlins 6-4 at Miller Park in front of 44,520 fans, the fourth largest home crowd of the 2011 season. The Brewers scored three in the seventh on RBI doubles by Corey Hart and Ryan Braun to take the lead, and John Axford retired the side in the ninth for his franchise record 42nd consecutive save.

The save was also Axford's 45th of the season, moving him past Francisco Cordero and into sole possession of first place on the Brewer single season list:

Player Season Saves
John Axford 2011 46
Francisco Cordero 2007 44
Derrick Turnbow 2005 39
Dan Kolb 2004 39
Trevor Hoffman 2009 37
Bob Wickman 1999 37

Axford picked up his 33rd save of the 2012 season on Sunday and is now tied with 1989 Dan Plesac for eighth on the above list. He's the first Brewer ever to have multiple 33 save seasons.

Today is also the anniversary of a 1999 game against the Astros that was marred by an ugly incident as a fan jumped out of the stands to attack Houston outfielder (and former Brewer) Bill Spiers. We covered that event in this space last year.
