On this day in 2007 the Brewers beat the Cardinals 9-1 behind one of Prince Fielder's best offensive games. He went 2-for-2, walked twice and drove in four runs with a pair of home runs, one each off Kip Wells and future teammate Braden Looper.
Fielder's second home run was his 50th of the season, making him the first Brewer and the youngest player in major league history to reach 50 homers. Here are the top five:
Player | Season | Age | Team | HR |
Prince Fielder | 2007 | 23 | Brewers | 50 |
Jimmie Foxx | 1932 | 24 | Athletics | 58 |
Ralph Kiner | 1947 | 24 | Pirates | 51 |
Willie Mays | 1955 | 24 | Giants | 51 |
Mickey Mantle | 1956 | 24 | Yankees | 52 |
Fielder finished the year with these 50 home runs, won the NL Silver Slugger Award and finished third in the voting for NL MVP.
With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:
- 2011 Brewer Wil Nieves, who turns 35.
- 1998-2001 and 2009 Brewer David Weathers, who turns 43.
- 1977-80 Brewer Dick Davis, who turns 59.
Today is also the anniversary of Jeromy Burnitz and Richie Sexson combining for six home runs in a 9-4 win over the Diamondbacks in 2001. We covered that event in this space last year.
