Brewer Playoff Hopes Continue To Fade With 4-2 Loss To Reds

If the Cardinals finish off a win against the Astros, the Brewers will enter play tomorrow 4.5 games back with eight to play.

W: Johnny Cueto (19-9)
L: Mike Fiers (9-9)
S: Aroldis Chapman (36)

HR: Aramis Ramirez (26)

MVP: Brandon Kintzler (+.030 WPA)
LVP: Mike Fiers (-.223)

Win Expectancy Graph

It's become increasingly clear that Mike Fiers doesn't have much left in the tank.

Tonight was his fifth start in September and the fifth time he's failed to record an out in the sixth inning. He lasted just 4.1 innings tonight, retiring 13 batters and allowing four runs on eleven baserunners. He did strike out eight Reds in the game, but is still carrying a 6.70 ERA in September.

With that said, it didn't much matter because the Brewer offense didn't bring much to Cincinnati tonight either. They plated single runs on a Jean Segura RBI single and an Aramis Ramirez solo home run, but managed just five hits in the game and did not draw a walk.

The Brewers have now lost back-to-back games for the first time in over a month and trail the Cardinals by four games, pending the result of their game against the Astros tonight. They play the Reds again tomorrow night, with Shaun Marcum taking on Bronson Arroyo.
