Miguel Fuentes is the answer to an interesting trivia question: As a rookie September callup in 1969 he pitched the final inning in the history of the Seattle Pilots. Unfortunately, it would be his last major league outing.
Fuentes, who was 23 years old, went back to his home in Puerto Rico to play winter ball, and on this day in 1970 he was shot and killed in a barfight in Loiza Aldea.
Topps had already sent their 1970 baseball cards to print at the time of the shooting, so Fuentes still appears in the Pilots' 1970 set as one of their "Rookie Stars." His card is pictured above. Fuentes had earned a September callup by posting a 1.46 ERA in 26 appearances for Clinton in the Midwest League, striking out 62 batters over 74 innings. He had a 5.19 ERA over eight appearances (four starts) as a Pilot.
With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to:
- 2005 Brewer Julio Mosquera, who turns 41. We covered his birthday in this space last year.
- 1970 Brewer Bobby Bolin, who turns 74.
