If the Brewers had tried a "bullpen day" during the 2012 regular season, it might have turned into a complete disaster. They tried it with their new bullpen today and saw slight improvement, as they didn't lose by quite as many.
Tom Gorzelanny made his Brewer debut today and pitched a scoreless inning, but things came off the rails a bit after that. John Axford allowed a run on two hits in the second inning, and Michael Gonzalez allowed two more on three hits in the third. Jim Henderson pitched a scoreless fourth, but Ariel Pena allowed another run on a homer in the fifth.
The Rockies plated another run in the eighth but those first four runs would have been more than enough, as the Brewers pushed just two across. Jean Segura tripled in the fourth and came home on Logan Schafer's RBI groundout. Segura had two of the Brewers' eight hits today. Another run scored on Robinzon Diaz's ninth inning single.
The Brewers had what you can only hope will be a teachable moment to erase a two on, one out threat in the sixth inning. With Norichika Aoki on first, Jean Segura singled. Aoki took a big turn at second and Segura took off for second, creating confusion on the basepaths that led to him being tagged out. Aoki thought it was the third out and started to walk off the field, so he was tagged out too.
Hunter Morris' single in the third inning was his first hit of the spring.
The Cactus League schedule continues tomorrow when the Brewers host the Angels in Maryvale at 2 pm. The Angels entered today still looking for their first win of the spring, but as of this writing they're leading the Dodgers.
