The Frosty Mug is off today. If you have links you'd like to discuss, drop them in the comments and have at it. If you'd like to know why I'm taking a day off, continue reading.
It's possible you've already seen this somewhere else, but Google announced this week that they're shutting down Google Reader on July 1. Reader is a vital part of the work I do here each day and has been from the very beginning of the Mug. It's what makes it possible for me to see what's new nearly everywhere and condense it for you.
With Google Reader on its last legs, Thursday afternoon I set out to look for alternatives. One I considered was Feedly, which came pretty highly recommended. Unfortunately, my experiment with Feedly is the reason there's not a Mug today.
You see, with a single click on a "What does this do?" button, I marked all of the unread posts that would've made up today's Mug as read both within Feedly and my Google Reader account. I could go back through the feeds and regroup, but it'd take a boatload of time so I'm just going to look ahead to Monday.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for RSS reader alternatives to Google, let me know. If you don't, sign a petition to save Reader. Without it, I'm not sure I can continue the Mug.
