Today In Brewer History: Scooter's Spring Cycle

One of the brightest moments in Scooter Gennett's young career came in a game that didn't count.

USA TODAY Sports

On this day one year ago the Brewers won both halves of a Cactus League split-squad doubleheader, but the big news came from the game against the Royals in Surprise(!). Scooter Gennett, batting second and playing second base, hit for the cycle in the Crew's 7-3 win.

Gennett saved the big blow for last, hitting the home run in his final at bat in the eighth inning to finish the cycle. He's only hit 23 home runs over three professional seasons in the minors, so it was also a pretty unlikely outcome. Gennett was still only 21 at the time.

This performance wasn't enough to get Scooter a spot on the Opening Day roster, though. He spent the 2012 season with AA Huntsville and hit .293/.330/.385 over 133 games.

With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2004 Brewer Adrian Hernandez. He turns 38.

Today is also the anniversary of transactions that ended the Brewer careers of outfielders Chris Dickerson and Trot Nixon and pitcher Claudio Vargas (temporarily). We covered those events in this space last year.
