Brewers 4, Cubs 3

The Brewers defeated the Cubs 4-3 in a Spring Training game.

Jonathan Daniel

W: Estrada, 1-0

L: Jackson, 0-1

S: Figaro, 1

HR: Gomez (1), Baez (1)

The damage on offense in this one was done by the fearsome foursome of Carlos Gomez, Blake Lalli, Taylor Green, and Logan Schafer, who each drove in a run. Schafer (1-2) drove in a run with a walk in the first in our first look at Edwin Jackson as a Cub, followed by Green (2-3) hitting a run-scoring single. Gomez hit a deep home run in the third. Catcher Blake Lalli later scored Green with a double. Also of note, Hunter Morris had a solid double in his only at-bat.

Marco Estrada made the start today in place of Yovani Gallardo, who threw a bullpen session instead due to a minor injury (the session apparently went well). Estrada turned in the second straight nice start for the Brewers, going 4 scoreless innings with 3 strikeouts, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks. Brandon Kintzler gave up a 2 run home run in his inning of work.

The biggest and least fortunate news of the day involved the comeback efforts of Kelvim Escobar. There was hope he would earn a spot in the bullpen after only throwing 5 major league innings since 2007, but those chances took a hit today when he left the game in the sixth inning with "elbow soreness". He struck out the first batter he faced but walked 2 and hit another before leaving the game. Bullpen candidate and mustached-American Michael Olmsted took over and limited the damage to one run.

Johnny Hellweg continued to impress and improve his chances of making the team, pitching a perfect seventh and eighth with a strikeout. Alfredo Figaro closed down the victory with a scoreless ninth, getting a couple of nice plays at second base by Scooter Gennett.
