On this day in 1969 the Seattle Pilots and Red Sox went to extra innings tied at 4. Both teams were scoreless in the tenth before all hell broke loose in the eleventh. Here's the Pilots half of the inning:
- Jim Gosger tripled.
- John Kennedy, who hadn't gone deep all season, homered.
- Larry Haney lined out.
- Tommy Harper homered.
- Mike Hegan grounded out.
- Tommie Davis walked.
- Don Mincher doubled, scoring Davis.
- Wayne Comer homered.
- Rich Rollins singled.
- Jim Gosger grounded out.
This is still the only time in franchise history the Brewers have hit three extra inning homers in the same game. But here's the thing: They almost lost anyway.
Jack Aker (pictured above) came in to pitch the bottom of the eleventh and allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach, plating two runs. John O'Donoghue followed him to the mound and allowed a two-run single and a sac fly to bring Boston within one. Finally, Carl Yazstrzemski struck out to end the game, with a final score of 10-9.
With help from the B-Ref Play Index, happy birthday today to 2010-12 Brewer George Kottaras. He turns 30.
Today is also the 13th anniversary of the Brewers beating the Astros in 16 innings in 2000 despite Kevin Barker's 0-for-8 day. We covered that event in this space last year. It's also the 25th anniversary of Robin Yount passing Cecil Cooper for first place on the franchise's all-time RBI list, and we covered that event in this space two years ago.
