Early on, it looked like this would be a quick night for the Brewers. The starters were complete opposites in the early innings.
After 6 pitches, Jaime Garcia had finished the first inning.
After 6 pitches, the Cardinals had a 1-0 lead off of Wily Peralta.
After 28 pitches, Jaime Garcia was through the third inning.
After 28 pitches, Wily Peralta had allowed five runs on five hits and one walk, and hadn't finished the first inning.
Peralta just couldn't get completely settled in tonight. He managed to put together four more innings after the first to spare the bullpen from complete overuse, but still allowed a few more single runs in the third and fourth innings. For the game, he allowed seven runs (six earned) on eleven hits and a walk. He did tie his career high in strikeouts with six.
It looked like it was going to be a long night, but the Brewers managed to put a comeback together. They took advantage of some Garcia mistakes in the fourth inning, capped off with a three-run home run from Aramis Ramirez. They would then repeat the feat in the sixth inning, getting a few base runners on for Aramis Ramirez to hit his second home run of the night and get the Brewers within one at 7-6. After a perfect first three innings, Garcia gave up six runs on six hits and a walk in his last 2 1/3 innings of work.
However, the Brewers could not get the last few runs they needed to get the lead. They had a prime opportunity in the eighth inning when Braun led off with a single and Ramirez had a 3-0 count at the plate, but Ramirez struck out and Braun was caught stealing to end that threat. Edward Mujica came on for the Cardinals in the ninth and worked a quick inning to end the game and give the Brewers their fourth straight loss and 13th in their last 15 games.
The Brewers will try to get a win and end this losing streak again tomorrow. Marco Estrada starts for the Brewers and Lance Lynn for the Cardinals. First pitch is at 6:15 pm.
