The Brewers wrapped up a 3-6 homestand on Wednesday night with a 4-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. The loss can best be summed up by recounting the bottom of the ninth inning. Carlos Gomez led off the inning with a double, his fourth hit of the night. He then took third base on a wild pitch, and Milwaukee stranded him there. Logan Schafer popped out to the shortstop and Yuni Betancourt popped out to first. Alex Gonzalez finished off the two-game series with a groundout to third. Game over.
In all, the Brewers collected twelve hits but plated just one run. Jean Segura was thrown out on a play-at-the-plate in the third inning when he tried to score from second base on a liner up the middle from Aramis Ramirez with two outs. Replays showed he let up as he neared the home.
In the sixth inning, the Brewers scored their lone run on three extra base hits. Ryan Braun led off the inning with a triple and scored on Ramirez's double to deep right. Ramirez was thrown out, however, after he tried to take third when a pitched ball got away from Rangers catcher, Geovany Soto. This prevented the Brewers from picking up a run when Gomez hit a two-out triple later in the inning.
In the Mug this morning, Kyle noted that when Mitch Moreland took Wily Peralta deep on Tuesday night, the Brewers had allowed 42 home runs in 31 games, including 20 times in their current 4-8 stretch. Make that 44 home runs in 32 games, including 22 times in their current 4-9 stretch.
Kyle Lohse pitched out of some trouble in the first inning after giving up a run by striking out both Soto and David Murphy with the bases loaded. But he would give up a home run to Kinsler in the second inning and follow it up with a long ball to Moreland in the third. Although Lohse did not pitch poorly, 4 earned runs over 6.1 innings, with the Brewers struggling to score runs it was more than enough for the Rangers. Alfredo Figaro pitched well in relief with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
After Thursday's off day, Milwaukee starts a 10-game road trip with NL Central opponents in Cincinnati.
