Today's lessons includes plenty of coverage from Day 1 of the MLB Draft.

Yesterday's Results

Brewers 8, Twins 5

It looked like it was going to be one of those days after Wily Peralta gave up a grand slam in the 3rd inning and the Twins took a 4-0 lead. However, Carlos Gomez hit a three-run home run in the next inning to make it a close game, and then the Brewers went ahead in the sixth inning on a Khris Davis home run. and Jean Segura single. The Twins would cut the Brewers lead to 1 in the eighth, but a two-run home run by Jonathan Lucroy padded the lead and gave the Brewers their final margin of victory.

Kodi Medeiros, Jacob Gatewood, and Monte Harrison are now members of the Brewers organization.

The first round of the MLB draft took place yesterday, and three players were drafted and added to the Brewers organizations. Here are the three picks, along with some quick analysis:

Round 1, Pick #12: Kodi Medeiros
Round 1, Pick #41: Jacob Gatewood
Round 2, Pick #50: Monte Harrison

It's important to keep perspective about these draft picks.

Most people had positive things to say about the Brewers first day of the draft. However, there's not much you can predict from the picks today. It will take years before we will know the success or failure of these picks. Prior to the draft yesterday, Derek wrote about managing your expectations on these picks. It's important to not jump off the deep end based on who the Brewers did or didn't pick. Some players the Brewers didn't pick may get to the majors faster, and that's to be expected. Just be patient and see the overall picture before reacting to the results.

The Brewers would look very different if they were only constructed with drafted players.

How does Hunter Pence in the outfield sound? How about Corey Hart as a bench player? This is just a few of the things that could happen if teams were constructed only using drafted players. Yesterday, Noah put together rosters for all 30 MLB teams of what they would look like if they were composed only of drafted players. When you look at something like this, it helps see the success (or lack of success) and organization has with their picks. The Brewers have a lot of talent on the hitting side, but the pitching isn't as good. This may not mean much, but it's interesting to look at anyway.

Kendrys Morales could be coming to Milwaukee soon.

With the MLB Draft in progress, any draft pick compensation attached to Kendrys Morales is gone. With that gone, interest on the first baseman is picking up. Rumors started coming out, and the Brewers were one of the teams mentioned as a possibility. Morales had been rumored as a target during the offseason, but the draft pick compensation kept everyone away. Mark Reynolds has been decent so far at first base, so the need isn't as great as it was before. However, Morales would definitely provide an upgrade for the team. The question is if the cost is worth the upgrade.
